ursing Outlook readers who are interested in developing collections of nursing books and journals need no introduction to the list of 355 books and 84 journals that follows the Brandon/ Hill list. More than 18 years have elapsed since Alfred N. Brandon and I published the first "Selected List of Nursing Books and Journals" in Nursing Outlook in 1979.1 The positive response over the years by both nurses and librarians has been overw h e l m i n g . We h a v e been g e n u i n e l y pleased that our work has been accepted by so many colleagues as a reliable source for developing print nursing collections. In fact, the 1998 update is being published in the January/February issue of Nursing Outlook rather than the March/April issue because many people have to spend their book money early in the calendar year, and they believe that having early access to the nursing list would make it more useful to them. The goal of this list has not changed since its first publication. Then and now, it is intended to be a selection guide for individuals, sometimes with little background knowledge, who are charged with the responsibility of choosing nursing publications for a library or a departmental collection. It is not presented as a "standard" or the "one-and-only" nursing collection. Hypothetically, if I were charged with the task of developing a current nursing book and journal collection, these are the books and journals I would have chosen at the time the manuscript was submitted for publication. NURSING OUTLOOK
Whereas the goal of the list will not change, the authorship has changed. On July 4, 1996, the medical library profession lost one of its most distinguished and revered members with the unexpected death of Alfred N. Brandon, senior author of the "Selected Lists" (small medical library, nursing, and allied health). He guided and nurtured these publications from their first appearance to their international status. This and subsequent updates of the nursing list bear the title "Brandon/Hill Selected List of Nursing Books and Journals," because the concept and the methodology for their compilation belong to my late coauthor. I intend to follow his tradition. Alfred Brandon had a special interest in nursing literature long before 1979. It began with his association with the Cumu-

Iative Index to Nursing Literature in the mid 1950s, now titled Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL). He continued as the CINAHL representative to the Interagency Council on Library Resources for Nursing (now the Interagency Council on Information Resources for Nursing) until several years ago. Because of the success of the small medical library list, he had been asked repeatedly by individual nurses and nursing groups to

compile a comparable list of nursing books and journals. The need for such a publication was deemed great in the 1970s, and despite technology, that need exists even today. In the early 1970s I had set up a new nursing collection at Mount Sinai, so I, too, had special interest in nursing books and journals. From the inception of the nursing list, we worked closely together. Even though audiovisuals and other electronic formats are used heavily in many nursing programs, I am continuing to limit coverage to print media--books and journals. Because audiovisuals are often designed for self-instruction or integral curriculum usage and because the ways in which individuals learn and teach are so varied, both Alfred Brandon and I agreed that it was not realistic for us to recommend these media in "list format," and that decision remains true for the 1998 Brandon/Hill list. A recent search of the nursing literature brought forth numerous articles on technology, the Internet, and nursing informatics z'5 and very little about print books and journals. No one can ignore the importance of technology in both present and future libraries. However, there are too many futurists who cannot wait to dispense with books and journals to make way for the virtual library. Nevertheless, some nurses are calling to the attention of their peers the importance of the print book and journal to the nursing profession. 68 In no way does this lessen the value of the new technologies, but it puts them into perspective with the print scholarly record. Perhaps the biggest problem is neither print nor electronic. Instead, it is the ability to know how to combine these m e d i a - print and computers--into one unified Hill

whole. Integrating the flexibilities of electronic materials with the momentum of print media represents not only the need for information, but also the knowledge to use the tools effectively so that the message being carried becomes paramount to the message carrier. Technology is merely a tool and cannot replace the expertise of nurses or librarians who are therefore indispensable intermediaries. Paper and electronic materials both have important roles to play in the Information Age. The Brandon/Hill project deals exclusively with the unique body of nursing knowledge as recorded in print on paper. Several months after the death of my coauthor, it became clear to me that I could not carry on the "Brandon/Hill Selected Lists" at the same quality level that had existed previously unless I was able to find some help. I was most fortunate to have received an offer from a long-time Levy Library colleague, Henry Stickell, to assist in any way that he could. We discussed the matter and decided that he could make a noteworthy contribution. Subsequently, he carried out many support aspects of this project, one of them being the compilation of the author/editor index. Most importantly, his help provided me with extra time to concentrate on the book and journal selection process. As I previously mentioned, the purpose of the list that follows is to provide a book and journal selection guide to assist libraries and librarians newly involved in the acquisition of nursing literature. I have carefully reviewed, studied, and considered all of the input, pro and con, that I have received from nurses, librarians, publishers, and vendors, but the final choices of books and journals are mine. I attempted to evaluate each item as I presumed Alfred Brandon would--and then again, from my point of view. I have tried to include books and journals that, in my opinion, represent contemporary concepts, theories, and trends in nursing and set forth sound clinical methods. Authorship, readability, content organization and presentation, clarity of topic, effective use of illustrations, and subject access through back-of-book indexes were carefully considered as I was deciding which books to include. I have continued to rely upon several articles written by nurse educators in the late 1980s and early 1990s for evaluating textbooks9qS;I could find no new articles on this topic. 8

Journals of a profession provide an ongoing record of the theory, progress, and unique knowledge of that profession, and I have reviewed nursing journals from that aspect. In subject areas in which there are several journals, I have chosen those that I believe are the best in their comprehensive subject coverage. Often it is difficult to make this decision based on the first issue or even the first volume of a new journal. I have added two titles to the 1998 journal list, AmericanJournal of Hospice and PalliativeCare and CriticalCare Nurse. I am cautious when it comes to replacing a "standard" journal with a new one. For that reason, the journal list is more stable than the book list from year to year. It should be noted at the onset that this list cites only currentpublications, predominantly of United States origin, geared specifically to a nursing audience. Therefore older classic nursing books and "standard" texts do not appear in this list. "Newer" does not necessarily mean "better," and the choice should be a local decision. The old-

est book in this list is dated 1992, whereas 95% were published in 1995 or later. Approximately 42% of the titles in the 1998 book list have been changed from the 1996 list. If two books were comparable in content and authorship, I tended to choose the most recent one. This compilation of books and journals is not adequate to support an academic nursing program, because as an interdisciplinary profession, nursing depends upon the literature of a wide range of related subjects in addition to its own. Persons in nursing settings who need to acquire medical publications, especially for nurse practitioners and advanced nurses, might find the Brandon/Hill list of recommended books and journals for the hospital library helpful36 The Brandon/Hill list for allied health might also supplement a nursing collection, especially in an insti-
tution having an emphasis on cross-training and multiskills, iv I have had to make many difficult decisions to comply with available publishing space and selection parameters. As a result, I know that excellent books and journals have been excluded. Such publications should not be stigmatized because they are not included in this list, which is only a guide and not a mandate. Examples of publication types being omitted are association publications, series, bibliographies, reviews, and instructors' guides and student study guides for major textbooks. Publishers should be contacted for information about textbook guides. Publications of the National League for Nursing and the American Nurses' Association are essential for any nursing collection and should be acquired upon publication. In fact, in the book list I have included one monograph from the National League for Nursing-Item No. 224, Guide for the Development
and Management of Nursing Libraries and Information Resources, edited by Dorothy L. Moore. This is one book that should be available to everyone dealing with nursing literature and information. Whereas review publications are not included in either the book or the journal list, the Annual Review of Nursing Research, published by Springer Publishing Company, has covered nursing research for more than 15 years and is an essential part of any nursing collection. Besides the Brandon/Hill list, few upto-date sources exist to help the inexperienced person in selecting nursing publications. In 1995, Doody's Nursing and Allied Health Book Review Quarterly began publication; it reviews publications of interest to nurses, and according to the publisher, each issue provides a comprehensive picture and technical review of 100 titles5 s Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) and Doody Publications have collaborated to provide online expert book reviews of newly published nursing books and other services for STTI members. "Books of the Year," a subject category listing of approximately 30 books, selected as the year's "best" by nurses having expertise in the various subject categories, is published annually in the January issue the of American Journal of Nursing~9; at one time this bibliography consisted of 40 to 50 books. Current acquisitions lists from nursing, hospital, and medical center libraries are helpful

in determining what nursing publications are being acquired by other libraries. Information supplied by medical book and journal vendors also provides valuable assistance in selecting current nursing publications. With the exception of several nursing dictionaries, I have not included reference works. A committee of the Interagency Council on Information Resources for Nursing (ICIRN) has compiled the 19th edition of "Essential Nursing References," a listing of nursing and biomedical informational materials including audiovisuals, computerized bibliographic data bases, Internet resources, print sources as well as a Canadian supplement, z° It is revised biennially. Because the nursing literature referred to in this list is primarily of United States origin, Canadian libraries need to supplement their collections with publications from the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA). The C N A puts out two journal lists that are updated annually. The first,
Suggested List of Periodicalsfor Nurses in the Canadian Health Sciences Library, is divided into core or principal journals, recommended journals, and French-language journals, z~ The second is the List of Canadian Periodicals in Nursing. z2 The C N A is planning to make these lists available electronically early in 1998. A p p r o x i m a t e l y $25,100 would be needed to purchase all of the 355 books and 84 journals (1998 subscriptions) on this list--$15,400 for books and $9700 for subscriptions. Items suggested for first purchase--136 books and 35 j ournals--are designated by asterisks, because many individuals cannot afford or may not need all or even most of the listed publications. The cost of the books and journals suggested for first purchase is about $10,400-$6350 for books and $4050 for 1998 subscriptions. The bibliographic information and NURSING OUTLOOK
prices given here are as accurate as I could obtain at the time the manuscript was submitted, but over time prices may vary. Price information was provided by book and journal vendors and publishers. Journal prices for 1998 are noted at institutional (library) rates; in some instances individual (personal) subscriptions may cost less. The price information shown in Table 1 applies only to publications that appear in this list and have appeared in its predecessors; titles, though similar, vary from list to list. Because of mergers, takeovers, and the changing of publishers' names, the imprint on a book may not necessarily be indicative of the publisher that is presently distributing it. I have tried to cite the books using the names of the publishers currently distributing them. New editions will be updated with the imprints of the current publishers. Books are arranged according to 56 broad subject headings. Two new subject headings have been added to the 1998 book list: Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Nursing and Psychological Aspects of Nursing. It has been very difficult to select books in a number of subject categories because there are so many really good ones to choose from; for example, in Administration and Managed Care, Critical Care Nursing, Home Health Nursing, Medical and Surgical Nursing, Nursing Diagnosis, and Psychiatric Nursing, the choices are tremendous. When a book has more than two authors or editors, the notation "et al." appears after the name of the senior author or editor. In the author/editor index that follows the book list, I have included only the senior person; names of joint authors and joint editors do not appear. When the name of the original author or editor is an integral part of the title, that name has been included. If a new edition of a book has been scheduled for early 1998 and the publisher has reported a price, I have used that edition and price. Other new editions for 1998

are noted as "in preparation." If a book is to be revised in 1999, I have listed the in-print edition and stated that a new one is due in 1999. Journals are listed alphabetically by title. Biennial revisions of the nursing list will be updated in A Major Report, put out by Majors Scientific Books. Before his death, Alfred Brandon compiled and edited this quarterly newsletter, which is heavily used as a collection development tool. 23 During the past 18 years, Alfred Brandon and I had made it our goal to recommend what was, in our opinion, the best in current nursing literature. In compiling the 1998 Brandon/Hill nursing list, my goal has been the same. I hope my work will be useful to nurses and librarians who find themselves responsible for selecting a collection of current nursing books and journals. I thank all the publishers and vendors who contributed data to the 1998 update of the Brandon/Hill nursing list. As in the past, I would appreciate receiving suggestions, criticisms, and comments to assist me in this project. [] REFERENCES
