The marine industry remains one of the most important markets for composites. In this month’s marine focus we look at two areas of development – attempts to ‘industrialise’ the boat manufacturing process (pages 2427), and the widening use of composite vessels in the patrol boat sector, where speed is becoming increasingly important (pages 18-22). In our technology report this month we take a look at filament winding. The good news it that equipment suppliers say that business in this sector is picking up, and the feature on pages 2833 illustrates some of the developments in equipment and applications now taking place. Software is a vital part of the filament winding process and on pages 34-37 we review the evolution of the Cadwind software

package over the past 20 years. One growing application of filament winding is in pressure vessels for natural gas vehicles and on pages 38-41 we outline a test method which could help increase the use of composites in this sector. Finally, we round off this issue with some guidelines for incorporating structural adhesives into the composite manufacturing process.

This month’s cover shows a Harmony 47 (foreground) and a Harmony 42. These vessels are made by French boat builder Boat Industry System (BIS), which has developed an ‘industrialised’ process for the continuous production of the hull and deck mouldings.
