Additives for Polvmers
specially developed chlorinated alicyclic hydrocarbon. This combination has a high temperature resistance, (up to 3OOOC) and good electrical properties. Epoxy filler for boats
A new two-part epoxy filler is available from International Paint’s Yacht Division, for profiling on wood and metal hulls and in osmosis treatment of GFW hulls. Known as Inter-fill830, it replaces Interfill 500 at the same price but with a number of benefits. It has an SG of only 0.74, compared with 1.00 for the earlier formulation, and is easier to sand, with smaller microspheres which enable a finer finish to be achieved. Depths up to 2 cm can be filled without sagging, the company says.
Core material for GFW structures
Impag Great Britain has introduced a new core material for the production of light weight GRP structures. Called Spheretex, the material is a combination of hollow microspheres with reinforcing fibre. This can be in a woven, continuous form or as a random chopped strand mat. Future grades may use aramid or carbon fibres, says the firm. Typically, resin absorption is 40% lower than conventional cores which do not contain microspheres. Additionally, the presence of microspheres reduces the density, and so specific weight, by up to 50% compared to conventional materials.
Carbon fibres
RK Carbon will shortly commence production of a 23,000 filament count commercial grade carbon fibre, which it says will offer cost savings of up to 25% compared with 6,000 and 12,000 filament fibres. Designated KK 20K the new grade is produced from a much cheaper, and more readily available, acrylic precursor than the specialised precursors normally used.
Glass reinforced nylons
Atochem has added two long-fibre reinforced grades to the Rilsan nylon range, which it says are suitable for thinner and lighter injection moulded engineering components. Key properties of mouldings, compared with standard fibre-length reinforced grades, are impact resistance up by around 200%, improved dimensional stability and abrasion resistance, reduced moisture absorption, and improved surface finish. Designated MA 4505 FL and MA 4506 FL, they contain 30 and 50% of long fibres respectively, and are supplied as 15 mm long granules.
Universal masterbatches
Universal colour masterbatches have been introduced by Colourfast in the UK. Based on a multi-component carrier said to obviate the possibility of degradation of the physical
