Cash aid for CAD kit The UK Department of Industry is to put a further £12 million in its mechanical CADCAM and electronics CADMAT awareness schemes over the next two years. The support will be in the form of capital grants of up to a third the cost of hardware/software systems for first time users or for the integration of software packages and peripherals into existing computer installations. To qualify, firms should operate within Division 3 of the Standard Industrial Classification and their business must bc conducted in the UK. Application forms should be returned by 31 August '.,984. The names of 13 firms agreeing to share experience in CADCAM by providing demonstration facilities have also been announced. They are: • • • • •

Practical experience Training and information in CADCAM may be obtained from the practical experience centres being established by the UK government's awareness scheme. The centres are being run by established companies in the field, who are offering their facilities and staff. Flexible manufacturing is a comprehensive manufacturing system with a central online computer controlling machine tools and workstations. l-he money is to be spent over the next five years on consultancy {grants of up to 50 per cent of costs are available) and on development and capital costs [up to 33V3 per cent grants). The innovatory aspects will be considered in selecting which schemes will receive grant aid, with innovation in sector of industry and geographical location being taken into account. However, this scheme (established under the 1972 Industry Act) is not intended to fund the more inventive high risk schemes currently covered by the Science and Technology Act fun ds. Summagraphics move into UK Summagraphics have set up a UK subsidiary to market its design and drafting systems.
