CAD/CAM Technology Transfer to Latin America Havana, Cuba, November 19-24, 1990
The 1988 International Conference on C A D / CAM Technology Transfer to Latin America, sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in Mexico City, welcomed and accepted the Cuban delegation's request to host a similar Conference in Cuba in 1990. In the light of current changes brought about by computer-aided design and manufacture ( C A D / C A M ) technologies in engineering and manufacturing, the Conference is bound to be crucial for the promotion of international cooperation in this field. A meeting of this kind may also contribute to bridge the technological gap between Latin-American and other countries, enhance Latin-American unity and help put an end to dependence upon transnational companies. The Conference may also provide the framework for searching engineering solutions based on technical means available in an appropriate for Latin-American countries. Prestigious scientists from various parts of the world will be attending this important gathering in Havana. The Organizing Committee is hereby inviting you to participate in the Conference to be held on November 19-24, 1990 at the International Conference Center.

Intelligent CAD, I (Proc. IFIP TC 5 W G 5.2 Workshop, Boston, MA, USA), edited by H. Yoshikawa (University of Tokyo, Japan) and D. Gossard (MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA). North, Holland, Amsterdam, 1989, 260 pp., ISBN 0 AAA 87474-7, Dfl. 130.00.
Current CAD (Computer-Aided Design) systems, as used in many industries, are able to manipulate geometrical shapes very successfully. However, some would say that CAD means "Computer-Aided Drawing", i.e. CAD is only a very sophisticated drawing board, never intended to assist the thought processes of the designer. Automated design systems do exist, but these are limited to specific products with only a few varying parameters. This book deals with "Intelligent CAD", the concept of a system that could assist designers throughout the design process, deal with any object, and be connected to any other information processing system, such as CAM. The research papers collected here are from designers, and from researchers in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science.
