ORGANIZING COMMITTEE Professor Merlin Zhu (Chairman) Senior Engineer Zhou Shihou (Vice-Chairman) SECRETARIAT Professor Cheng-Gang Li (General Secretary, ) Miss Feng Gao (Secretary) BRIEFING OF THE THREE GORGES With Baidi City in Sichuan Province at the west end and Nanjin Pass of Yichang in Hubei Province at the east, the Three Gorges including Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge and Xiling Gorge, total 192 km in length. Qutang Gorge, known for its magnificence, is only 8 km long. Wu Gorge 44 km long is famous for its deep valley and quiet beauty. Among the Twelve Peaks in Wu Mountain, the Goddess Peak is the most beautiful one. Xiling Gorge, extending 66 km in length and full of rapids and whirlpools, is one of the most dangerous shoals. The famous Three-Gorge Hydraulic Power Station, which will be the largest hydraulic power station in the world, is being built here. SITE AND HOST UNIVERSITY Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province, is the transportation hub of central China through which the Yangtze-River flows. Boats from Wuhan can sail up stream to Chongqing through the famous Three Gorges. Air services are available between WuhanShanghai, Wuhan-Beijing, Wuhan-Guangzhou and Wuhan-Hongkong. There are also trains running between Wuhan-Beijing and Wuhan-Guangzhou. The average temperature in October is 20°C with clear blue sky and pleasantly cool autumn days, which is good for meeting and touring. Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), located in the suburbs of Wuhan, is one of the five largest universities in China. It has a 200 hectare campus, with a floor space of more than 600,000 square meters. HUST today has over 2,700 faculty members and approximately 15,000 full-time students. The big beautiful campus, the frequently conducted academic seminars and the research activities all constitute a good atmosphere for holding the conference. In recent years, 4-6 international academic conferences are staged on the campus every year.
