CONFERENCE REPORT Mining and Metallurgy in a Changing Environment University of Zimbabwe, Harare, Zimbabwe, 3-5 June 1996 Over 120 delegates attended the Conference, organised by the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering to mark the 10th anniversary of their foundation. The plenary Session dealt with Investment, Education and Training in the minerals industries and included three keynote addresses. The Conference then consisted of parallel sessions on mining and metallurgical topics, covering aspects such as Improved Mine Planning, Mining Machinery, Mining Development, Mineral Processing, Physical Metallurgy, Pyrometallurgy and HydrometaUurgy. The standard of papers was the usual mix, but one disappointment was the non-attendance of some of the listed overseas authors. Nevertheless, the papers will all be available in the form of printed Conference Proceedings, available from the Departments. The organisers are to be congratulated on their efficient, in-house arrangements, together with an excellent :~ocial programme which gave the event a convivial atmosphere and the next Conference in two years time is recommended.
