CONFERENCE REPORT The Fourth Conference on Environment and Mineral Processing Ostrava, Czech Republic, June 25-27, 1998
Ostrava in the Czech Republic is an old coal mining town and at present an important industrial center. The conference was held at the Mining University of Ostrava which is actually situated in Poruba, a suburb of Ostrava. The Mining University was originally founded in Pribram in 1849 after the Hungarian uprising and teaching in the Mining Academy in Schemnitz was converted from German to Hungarian. In 1951, the school was moved to its present location Ostava-Poruba to specialize in coal mining and steelmaking. The conference was an intensive two working days followed by a bus tour in the surroundings during the third day. A banquet was held in the evening of the first day which included folk dancing. A beer-drinking party was held in the second day which included a traditional miners guild ceremony during which many participants were dressed in traditional mining costumes and mining songs were sung. A two-volume proceedings in English was available on registration which included 100 papers, each paper was restricted to about seven pages. The volumes, about 350 pages each, can be purchased for US $100. They are fairly well presented but unfortunately not organized according to subject matter and lack an author index. They were edited by Docent Peter Fecko of the Institute of Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Mining and Geology and who was also Chairman of the conference. The conference is an annual event and potential participants for future conferences can plan an impressive stop-over in Prague, Kutna Hora, Brno, and other interesting historical and cultural cities. The Czech Republic is recovering very fast after so many decades of communist rule. Many authors from abroad did not attend the conference and the number of participants was 92 of which 50 were from the Czech Republic, 15 from Slovakia, 15 from the former Eastern Block countries, and the rest from Western countries. The official languages of the Conference were English, Czech and Slovak with simultaneous translation. The Conference started at 8:15 a.m. immediately after a few welcoming words from the chairman and ended at 6:30 p.m. with few coffee-breaks. This is unusual for Western participants who are accustomed to a get together evening reception before the opening ceremony next day followed by a plenary session. Ostrava has an important mining museum, a history museum, an Opera House, many interesting buildings, and an "Erratic Rock" which is a 7.2 tons granite boulder located at the terminal of the tram line to Koncisa, a suburb of Ostrava. It is said that this boulder dates from glacial times. Decent Ferko and his Organizing Committee did an excellent job and are to be congratulated for their efforts.
