Call for 2016 Award Nominations

All nominations, supporting documentation and letters of recommendation for honors and awards must be submitted by January 9, 2015, to: Dr. Shepard S. Goldstein, Chair, Honors and Awards Committee, c/o Casey Petersen, American Association of Endodontists, 211 E. Chicago Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, IL 60611-2691. Please note that the award criteria and guidelines have been updated since the 2015 nomination cycle.

Edgar D. Coolidge Award

The award is given to an individual who has displayed leadership and exemplary dedication to dentistry and endodontics. Nominations for this award remain active for two years. • Nominee must be an Active, Life, Educator, Disabled Active or Retired member of the AAE at time of nomination and approval by the Board of Directors. • Individual must have been active in AAE during his/her professional lifetime. • Nominations must include the nominee’s curriculum vitae, a letter of nomination, and five letters of recommendation. The award is presented annually at the Edgar D. Coolidge Luncheon during the AAE Annual Session.

• Recipient must have less than 10 years full-time teaching experience. • Nominations must be made by an Active or Educator member of the AAE and must include: a. The nominee’s curriculum vitae b. A letter of nomination from the program director, department chair, dean, or other faculty member of the nominee’s educational institution, verifying the nominee’s rank and years of experience c. Five additional letters of support from colleagues and students Nominations may include other evidence as appropriate (awards, nominations, innovations in teaching, etc.). Previous recipients are ineligible to receive the award.

Louis I. Grossman Award

I.B. Bender Lifetime Educator Award

The award recognizes an author for cumulative publication of significant research studies that have made an extraordinary contribution to endodontology. Nominations for this award remain active for two years. • Nominee must be an Active, Life, Educator, Disabled Active, Retired or Associate member of the AAE at time of nomination and approval by the Board of Directors. • Nominations must include a letter of nomination and the nominee’s curriculum vitae. • The award need not be given annually. • The presentation of the award will be made during the AAE Annual Session.

Ralph F. Sommer Award

The award is given to the principal author(s) of a publication of specific significance to the science and art of endodontology. Nominations for this award remain active for two years. • Nominations must include a letter of nomination, the nominee’s curriculum vitae and publication title. • The award will not necessarily be given annually, but whenever an especially significant paper or book is identified. • The award may be given for articles describing developments or advances in methodology and/or materials and devices and for constructive influence on clinical practice. • The work may be authored by a nonmember and may be based on research; however, philosophical, social, technological and other works pertaining to endodontics will also be considered.

Edward M. Osetek Educator Award

Recipient must have demonstrated status as an outstanding educator by earning the esteem and respect of students and faculty associates; by the quality of former/current students and their impact on endodontics; and by receiving invitations to present endodontic seminars, lectures or workshops at other educational or research institutions. Nominations for this award remain active for one year, the year in which the nomination was made. • Award may be given annually. Recipient must be an Active or Educator member of the AAE and full-time faculty at the rank of instructor or assistant/associate professor in endodontics at an accredited U.S. dental school.

The I.B. Bender Lifetime Educator Award is given annually to acknowledge a member whose contributions to endodontics in the field of education have demonstrated excellence through selfless commitment to full-time educational pursuits, and whose valuable contributions have instilled in his/her students the desire to pursue excellence in their careers. Strong consideration should be given to those individuals whose many accomplishments have not been sufficiently recognized previously by the AAE. Nominations for this award remain active for two years. • Recipients are ineligible to receive the award again. • Previous recipients of the Edward M. Osetek Educator Award are eligible when they meet the award criteria. • Recipient must have demonstrated status as an outstanding educator and mentor for a minimum of 15 years (full time) by: earning the esteem and respect of peers and colleagues, faculty association and current/former students; the quality of former students and their impact on endodontics; and earning the national/international reputation as an outstanding contributor to the art and science of endodontics as evidenced by invited presentations, the extent of scholarly activity including original research, textbook contributions, teaching material development and continuing education involvement. •  Recipient must be an Active, Disabled Active, Life, Educator or Retired member at the time of nomination. • Recipient must be a current or retired full-time educator. • Nominations must include the following items: a. Letter of nomination and nominee’s curriculum vitae b. Five letters of support from present/former students, endodontic educators/administrators, including deans, and other evidence as appropriate (awards, nominations, innovations in teaching, etc.)

•  The recipient must have demonstrated status as an outstanding part-time educator and mentor for a minimum of 20 years by earning the esteem and respect of peers, colleagues, faculty, and current or former students. The 20 years may be an accumulation of teaching years at different institutions. • Nominations must include: a. Letter of nomination from the program chair, department chair, dean or other faculty member of the nominee’s educational institution verifying part-time teaching status b. The nominee’s current curriculum vitae c. Five letters of support from present/former students, endodontic educators/administrators, and other evidence as appropriate to demonstrate nominee’s value to endodontics as part-time educator Part-time shall be defined as an educator who is not considered full-time by the dental school or hospital where the educator taught endodontics in predoctoral programs or advanced specialty education programs in endodontics. The nominee may or may not have received compensation for their teaching.

Honorary Membership

Honorary Members shall be elected by the Board of Directors because of significant contributions that have furthered the advancement of endodontics. Nominations for this award remain active for two years. The award need not be given annually. • Individuals who are eligible for membership in the AAE are not eligible for Honorary membership. • Individuals must be living at the time of nomination and approval by the Board of Directors. • Nominations must include a letter of nomination.

Spirit of Service Awards: Lifetime and New Practitioner Dental Community Volunteer

The Spirit of Service Award is given annually to acknowledge an Active, Disabled Active, Educator, Life or Retired member who has demonstrated the true spirit of leadership either recently or over the years.
