Call for Papers

Special issue: Functions and mechanisms of imitation in childhood A special issue of the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, under the co-editorship of guest editors Malinda Carpenter and Mark Nielsen, will be devoted to papers about the functions and mechanisms of imitation in childhood. We encourage papers on a range of topics, including (but not limited to) social, instrumental, and pedagogical functions of imitation; developmental changes in the way different social learning mechanisms are employed; forms of mental state understanding involved in imitation; relations between imitation and other social or cognitive skills; factors influencing what and how children imitate; and cross-cultural perspectives on imitation. Comparative studies and studies involving atypically developing children also are welcome. Consistent with the editorial policy of JECP, "experimental child psychology" is interpreted broadly to include empirical (not only experimental) research on development in infancy, childhood, and adolescence, but we expect the main focus of this issue to be on infancy and early childhood. Manuscripts should be submitted by June 30, 2007, using the Elsevier Editorial System at http://ees.elsevier.com/yjecp. Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the usual guidelines [see the Guide for Authors on the journal homepage (http://www. elsevier.com/locate/yjecp) for details and address]. Authors should indicate in their cover letters that they wish their manuscripts to be considered for the special issue on functions and mechanisms of imitation in childhood. Papers submitted by Editorial Board members, their collaborators, or their students must be prepared for blind review; papers submitted by others may be prepared for blind review if the authors wish. Manuscripts that meet JECP criteria for scientific merit and importance but that are not selected for the special issue may be published in a regular issue of JECP. Inquiries, including questions about appropriate topics, may be sent electronically to Malinda Carpenter ([email protected]) or Mark Nielsen ([email protected]).
