Book Review

Cancer and Natural Medicine: Textbook of Basic Science and Clinical Research, By John Boik, Oregon Medical Press, 1996. During the past half century, most research into the causes of cancer, its prevention and therapy, have concentrated on the use of man-made chemicals. The exceptions to this lie mainly in the exploration by the pharmaceutical industry of relatively toxic components of plant origin as cancer therapeutic agents, and the influence of, mainly, dietic factors on cancer development. The reason for this concentration on the effects of man-made chemicals is not clear; it is probably a reflection of the human egotism that prefers its own mental prowess combined with a

marked disrespect for the fuddy duddy characteristics attributed to Mother Nature. Mr. John Boik deserves the accolades oi the medical and scientific community for his efforts in assembling present knowledge of natural therapies and combining it with current knowledge and beliefs about the mechanismsof cancer development. This soft-backed volume is well produced with massesof informative tables and figures. It is exceptionally well referenced. If a second edition is found to be necexsary, asthe presentfirst edition strongly indicates, it is to be hopedthat Mr. Boik will strengthenand expand his discussionon the prevention of the emergenceof cancer by natural, largely dietetic, factors.
