European market for biodegradable plastics
This is the title of a study published by F’rost & Sullivan Ltd. It predicts that production of biodegradable plastics should rise &om 4.6 million tonnes to 21 million tonnes over the next few years. Carrier bags will account for the largest share, with mulch fihn (both photo-and bio-de~a~ble) becoming the second largest application. Geographically, W. Germany will be the largest consumer of degradable plastics by 1992. In 1988, Italy was the largest user, with France in second place. Glass reinforced ~~~t~l~n~ne
A 30% glass reinforced ~l~e~yl~~ne is available from Phillips 66 Company in sample quotes. Trade-named Crystalor XCGSO, the material is the first in a series of reinforced FMPbeing developed by the company. It fills a performance gap in engineering thermoplastics, combining good mechanical properties with good thermal performance. It is tough and rigid, with a flexural strength of 14,000 psi, a flexural modulus of 860,000 psi and a tensile strength at break of 9,700 psi.
