The purpose of this poster is to educate the pediatric oncology/BMT nurse about the use of granulocytes. Key objectives: 1. Identify indications and contraindications of granulocyte transfusions. 2. Illustrate the process of granulocyte pheresis. 3. Describe risks, benefits, side effects and cost analysis of granulocyte transfusion. 4. Purpose: The purpose of the "Celebration of Life" program is to facilitate grieving and support to families who have lost a child. Needs A s s e s s m e n t : Through observation and feedback from families and staff, the need was identified for a formal program to offer support to families after the death of their child. Objectives: (1) To facilitate and support grieving in families who have lost a child. (2) To support and educate staff in working with families during and immediately after the loss of a child. (3) To provide resources and expertise to the community regarding the special needs of families who have lost children. Program

Family Component • Memorial services three times per year to remember children who died in the preceding 4 months • Annual memorial service to include all families cumulatively who have lost children • Bereavement kits for each nursing unit to include legacy materials for foot and hand prints, grief literature, bereavement records • Communication system for calling/writing families after a death • Monthly support groups.

Staff Component • Provide staff materials and guidelines for use with families after a death

• Continuing education programs on the topic of loss and grief • Nurse-to-nurse consultation to assist in working with families after a death

Community Component • Educational programs for community groups who work with children and families • Development of a community resource library • Consultation service for c o m m u n i t y groups who work with children and families to help promote appropriate services to grieving families.

Significance to Oncology Nursing: ( 1 ) Provides nurses the opportunity to participate in all aspects of caring for families undergoing the cancer experience. In this academic setting, hematology and oncology patients have been treated for many years. However, the Cancer Center, which consists of Hematology/Oncology, Stem-Cell Transplant, and Apheresis units has been open for only 5 years. On any given day, you will see students, graduates, residents, and staff each with their own set of questions. The pocket guide was developed to be a quick, standardized resource to answer some of these questions while increasing patient and parent satisfaction through increased continuity of care. The guide is a pocket-sized spiral bound book that includes a phone and pager directory, nursing diagnosis, and code blue information. Also included are frequently ordered laboratory values, formulary medications with dosages, chemotherapeutic agents with side effects and intravenous drug compatabilities specific to the hematologic/oncologic population.
