In order to improve and maintain the standards and qualities of materials used in the practice of dentistry and to pro mote the truthful advertising and label ing of the materials, the American Dental Association, through its Council on D en tal Research and through the us'e of facilities at the National Bureau of Standards, maintains a program for the certification of dental materials. Under this program, the manufacturer of a den tal material certifies that his product complies with the specifications which have been approved as official specifica tions of the American Dental Association and that he is in compliance with the American Dental Association Advertising and Exhibit Standards. If the product is found to comply with the specification, its name then is placed on the L is t o f C e r t if ie d D e n t a l M a t e r i a l s , which is maintained and published by the Coun cil on Dental Research of the American Dental Association. From time to time, materials on the C e r t if ie d L is t are tested in the labora tories of the National Bureau of Stand ards by the American Dental Association Research Division. W hen a product is found not to comply with official specifi

cations, the manufacturer is notified and the product is removed from the C e r t i fie d L is t . N o manufacturer may claim participation in the certification program except under authorization granted by the Council on Dental Research of the American Dental Association. Th e specifications of the Association are designed to provide standards of high quality and are discussed in detail in the Association’s publication G u id e to D e n t a l M a t e r ia ls . The G u id e should be consulted for explanatory notes on the properties of various dental materials and on the manipulative procedures required for producing appliances and restorations of good quality.

T h e Association’ s certification program applies only to products that are sold generally in the United States of Amer ica, and any manufacturer may certify a product. Certifications must be accom panied by the following information and such other data as may be requested by the Council on Dental Research from time to time : ( 1 ) the trade name of the

Prior to the acceptance of a manufactur er’s certification for any material, it is tested for compliance with the specifica tion by the American Dental Association Research Division under the supervision of the National Bureau of Standards. Test samples are procured on the open market at the expense of the manufac turer. In the case of noble metals, any scrap remaining after the completion of the tests is sent to the manufacturer. M A N U FA C TU RER ’S A G R EEM EN T

In certifying a product, the manufac turer agrees (1) that tests will be made regularly by the manufacturer to deter mine the continuing compliance of the material with the official specification; (2) that records of such tests shall be supplied as requested by the Council on Dental Research; (3) that test records and data for any batch o f certified ma terial shall be made available to the Council on Dental Research on request;

If a product is found to comply with an official specification of the American Dental Association, announcement of ac ceptance of the certification will be made by the Council and the name of the product will be placed on the List of Certified

Dental

Materials.

Following

such announcement, the manufacturer may indicate in promotional material and labeling that the product complies with an official specification by inclusion of the following statement: “This prod uct appears on the American Dental As sociation List of Certified Dental M ate rials.” T h e unauthorized use of the statement of compliance with a specification of the American Dental Association will subject the manufacturer to the usual legal re sponsibilities. In the purchase of certified material for use in dental practice, the list should

be considered as a quality guide. In ad dition, the package of material received should be checked for its exact name as given in the list and for the statement guaranteeing compliance with a specifi cation. T h e Council should be notified of any discrepancies. The materials appearing on this list will produce satisfactory restorations only if used properly. T h e respective manufac

product on the List of Certified Dental Materials is changed; (6) that, in label ing and promotional material, reference

turer’s directions should be rigidly ad hered to in using a specific material. In other words, the technic of using is as
