Supermarket PAs run by a microprocessor Public address announcements in shopping centres and supermarkets may now be controlled by a microprocessor. Aim Cambridge, profiled in Microprocessors and Microsystems June 1982, have built a cassette-based public announcement machine around an Intel 8035. Systems operating software is in the 4k of ROM available on the 8035 and was written using a Futuredata generalpurpose development system. A Prompt 48 development aid was also used. Chemical analysis of iron in the foundry Foundry-floor analysis of molten iron can be carried out with a UK built system. The P1256 measures carbon equivalent, carbon content, silicon content, phosphorous content and pour temperature of liquid iron. Based on the 6801 single chip microcomputer, the analyser is inten-
ded for portable use in the foundry. The operator must input the percentage of phosphorous in the batch on a counter and pour a sample of iron into a disposable cup. As the sample cools, the analyser measures the two temperatures at which the cooling temporarily stops tl~e 'liquidus' and the 'solidus'. These points are dependent on the levels of impurities in the metal. From the temperatures, the analyser calculates the impurity content and provides both a digital and a printed display of the results. Values in 3k of EPROM check whether the results are reasonable. Machine tool relays controlled by a Z8 A microcomputer-based replacement for relay systems in small machine tools has been released in the UK. Built around Zilog's Z8 single-chip microcomputer, the Micro 84 uses nonvolatile EAROM in 4-bit (one nibble) words.
Factory assembly monitored by a 16-bit micro Control and monitoring of assembly machines and plant processes is the aim of the 16-bit microcomputerbased SAS000 systems from Stanton Automation. A sequence of up to 120 operations can be controlled/monitored by the machine. It can be mounted remote from the machine or lie under control and can be linked to an alarm system. The SA5000 is based on the DEC Falcon 16-bit micro which incorporates 32k of RAM and 4k of ROM on one board. Interfaces included as standard are RS232C, parallel and current loop.

Logic analyser keeps its memory Nonvolatile memory of 4k is featured on the 6800-based laboratory logic analyser from Enertec. One of four formats for the memory must be used: 32 channe!s/128 words; 16 channels/ 256 words; eight channels/512 words; and four channels/1024 words. Commands are entered via a hexadecimal keypad. Input sampling rate is variable and can be set by an internal or an external clock at up to 100 MHz. Initialization is in one of four modes: automatic step rate; manual step rate; external step rate; and 'half if different from truth table'. The frequency range of the 7600 is 0-30 MHz synchronous and up to 100 MHz asynchronous.
