PROFILE
Cindy M.L. Hutnik, MD, PhD, FRCSC, DABO indy Hutnik is an assistant professor of ophthalmology with a special interest in glaucoma from the University of Western Ontario, London. She was born and raised in Windsor, Ont. Her mom was a homemaker and her dad a factory supervisor. Although her parents did not have a university background, they probably realized Cindy was destined for academia. From an early age she loved to read, and her parents had the unique chore of extricating books from her hands and forcing her to go outside to play. This early, insatiable appetite for learning has blossomed into a career characterized by academic prowess and excellence in research. Cindy was the top student at every institution she attended. In 1981 she ranked first among the City of Windsor secondary school graduates. In 1985 she was awarded the University of Windsor President's Medal and Board of Governor's Medal, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry. She then moved to Ottawa to pursue a PhD in biochemistry and, in typical Hutnik fashion, attained a 97% average at the University of Ottawa/National Research Council. During this time she met her future husband, Marc St-Amand, in the biochemistry lab, where an "instant chemistry" transpired. When Marc later began medical school, the two would have dates in such locations as the anatomy lab, where Cindy had time to peruse his medical texts, which sparked her interest in medicine. During research meetings she was impressed with how lasers interacted with biologic systems and entered the University of Ottawa medical school in 1990 with the singular intent of becoming an ophthalmologist. We are fortunate she maintained this aspiration, since during medical school she garnered the academic awards for cardiology, pediatrics, endocrinology, psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, and, of course, clinical biochemistry. In typical Hutnik fashion, she graduated from medical school as the gold medallist, while maintaining a part-time job as an aerobics instructor. Cindy began her ophthalmology residency in 1994 at the University of Western Ontario. During her training she garnered the PSI Foundation Resident Research Prize, numerous awards for best case presentation at Eye Rounds and several awards for her excellent teaching as a resident. She was positively influenced by Dr.

Donald Mills to pursue a career in glaucoma and completed a glaucoma fellowship with Dr. Paul Kaufman in Madison, Wis. In 1999 Cindy returned to Western as assistant professor of ophthalmology. In addition to a busy practice in London, she contributes her considerable expertise to outreach programs in Moose Factory, Ont., and with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind Mobile Eye Care unit. She has regular teaching rounds with the residents, which are aptly nicknamed Hutnik "workouts." Cindy is chair of her department's Research Committee at Western. She is also principal investigator of a major glaucoma clinical trial. (London was one of only three research sites initially chosen in all of Canada.) Before starting medical school, Cindy had numerous publications on such complex topics as "Confirmation that multiexponential fluorescence decay behaviour of holoazurin originates from conformational heterogeneity." She has added over 19 ophthalmology articles to this impressive publication list in

Her articles are on such farranging topics as nitrosoglutathione in trabeculectomy blebs, papillitis in Crohn's disease, orbital aspergillosis mimicking temporal arteritis and argon laser punctual occlusion. Cindy's husband is now an anesthesiologist. Their son, Eric, is 11t2 years old. Marc recounts that in typical Hutnik fashion, Cindy took call the weekend she gave birth and was back to work 5 weeks later. Despite his wife's mountain of work, Marc marvels at how she still manages to be a most "entertaining mommy." Cindy continues her fitness fanaticism. Marc built her a gym in the basement of their home so she could better indulge herself. When time permits, Cindy and Marc also enjoy gardening together. Cindy is a whirlwind of clinical and research activity who continues to collect momentum. Few have risen so far so fast. She will no doubt continue to excel in ophthalmology - in typical Hutnik fashion.
