PROFILE
James R. Lewis, MD, FRCSC im Lewis is a neuro-ophthalmologist and associate clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. After meeting him, one concludes it would indeed be difficult to find a nicer, more humble, yet accomplished ophthalmologist than "Gentleman Jim." Jim was born in Medicine Hat, Alta. His father was a banker, and his mother a stenographer. He graduated from Ponoka Composite High School as class valedictorian. During his university studies he received four scholarships from the Province of Alberta, two scholarships and an honour prize from the University of Calgary, and scholarships from Candel Oil Limited and Ashland Oil Limited. In 1979 he was awarded an honours degree in biochemistry from the University of Calgary. Originally he aspired to be a chemistry professor but opted for a career with more direct "people contact" and chose medicine instead. He graduated from the University of Alberta medical school in 1983, being awarded the Mary Fong Bursary in Medicine. He then completed 2 years of internal medicine, during which ophthalmology "caught his eye" as it seemed the medical specialty that best combined his o~going interests in chemistry, physics and biology. He completed his eye residency at the University of Alberta in 1989. In 1990, sponsored on an E.A. Baker Fellowship, Jim undertook a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami. This was supplemented by a pediatric neuroophthalmology fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, the following year. Jim was then recruited to the University of Alberta, where he has developed a busy adult and pediatric practice. He has presented an impressive collection of 25 neuro-ophthalmology papers and posters at various North American meetings on such topics as "astrocytoma presenting as isolated bilateral superior oblique palsy," "nonchiasmal temporal hemianopsia" and "bilateral central scotoma secondary to manganese toxicity." He is also the principal ophthalmologic investigator in Edmonton for the Canadian Vigabatrin Study. Of his academic duties, he most enjoys teaching medical students and the numerous ophthalmology, neurology, family practice and pediatric residents who seek him out.

The Lewis family at the Muttart Conservatory, Edmonton.
He is a member of many societies, including the COS, the North American Neuro-ophthalmology Society, the International Neuro-ophthalmology Society, the Christian Ophthalmological Society and the Christian Medical Dental Society of Canada. Jim met his wife, Carol-Ann, at church during their university years in Calgary. Carol-Ann has a Bachelor of Education degree and works as a teacher's aide as well as doing some part-time bookkeeping. Their daughter, Suzanne, is just finishing grade two. Taking after his Welsh grandfather, Jim has a passion for singing. He has been a tenor in the senior church choir for 28 years and finds this wonderfully relaxing and a good change of pace from the clinic. He is partial to Christmas anthems and occasionally does solos at weddings. He also dabbles in guitar, piano and golf, and is very much a family man. A family affair is cross-country skiing, and the Lewises look forward to doing more cycling, hiking and camping. The family likes to travel, and Jim usually coordinates these trips with the delivery of one of his numerous papers.

Gentleman Jim's philosophy in life is to always follow the "Golden Rule," and it shows. He is one of the "quiet forces" of Canadian ophthalmology who has accomplished much without calling attention to himself. We wish him well in his future endeavours.
