APPLICATIONS Personal & home care products Bathtime fun A number of surfactant and emulsifier products are discussed. Chemyunion offers Emulfeel SGP CHI (INCI: Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, sodium polyacrylate, xylitol, caprylic acid, glyceryl stearate) for the formation of organogels. It provides structuring of lipid and aqueous phases in which the lipid phase is immobilized in a three-dimensional crystalline gel network while the formation of a polymer network increases aqueous phase viscosity. The product is suited for cold and hot processing and contains a high degree of vegetable actives. Rahn supplies amino acidbased surfactants Amisoft ECS-22W (INCI: disodium cocoyl glutamate) and Amilite GCS-12K (INCI: sodium cocoyl glycinate). Amilite is precipitated below pH7, while Amisoft provides a creamy, stable and rich foam in acidic conditions. Several other products are described. haircare trends of consumers. Brazil currently represents 20% of the global growth in the haircare segment and serves as host to many leading research institutes and cosmetics companies. At the same time, it is home to a broad diversity of hair types and textures, many of which are also found in other regions around the world, making Brazil the perfect location to host the gCCH as it can simultaneously serve the growing local market and customers worldwide. In 2015, Clariant acquired a stake in Brazilian company Beraca, which supplies natural ingredients for haircare products. The company recorded a 1% turnover increase in Latin America in 2016, although turnover in Brazil stagnated at SFR 327 M (€306 M). However, Clariant is confident that growth will shortly return to Brazil and other countries in this region. In related company news, Clariant has formed a new Active Ingredients Unit to provide dedicated, expert support for the highly-specialized needs of the personal care industry. Its entry into the world of active ingredients expands its portfolio of speciality formulation ingredients for skin, hair and body care applications. The unit opened new facilities on the Sanofi BioParc in Toulouse, France, in Jan 2017, with further global expansion planned during the year. The team's priorities will be to extend Clariant's existing portfolio of naturally-sourced products from BioSpectrum and Beraca with the future development of novel nature-inspired active ingredients. Health/other Windtree Therapeutics’ aerosolized KL4 surfactant improves survival in avian influenza preclinical study Windtree Therapeutics announced that data from a preclinical influenza study showed that aerosolized KL4 surfactant reduced lung inflammation and improved overall survival in a well-established preclinical animal model. The company believes that these preclinical data add to a growing body of evidence that supports the role of KL4 surfactant as a potential medical intervention to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with both seasonal and pandemic influenza pneumonia. Analysis from this study indicates that KL4 surfactant treatment substantially improved survival and reduced lung injury from influenza infection both at Day 5 and Day 14 based on a histopathologic evaluation of the lungs. Animals treated with KL4 surfactant showed an 80% survival that was the same as those receiving the antiviral oseltamivir. This is in comparison to controls where only a 20% survival was seen. The KL4 surfactant treatment group also showed fewer clinical signs of influenza when compared with animals receiving oseltamivir. Original Source: Windtree Therapeutics Inc, 2017. Evonik introduces substrate wetting additives for printing on food packaging Evonik has launched two new substrate wetting additives, namely Tego Wet 285, a polyether siloxane copolymer, and nonionic organic surfactant Tego Wet 550. They have been developed specifically for printing on food packaging. Both have a very high molecular weight, which results in a particularly low tendency to migrate, preventing the substances from penetrating the packaging and reaching the food. They comply with the Swiss Consumer Goods Ordinance (Annex 6, List A), which governs the use of substances used for printing of food packaging. Due to its excellent substrate wetting properties, Tego Wet 550 enhances process reliability and achieves high-quality printing results. It is particularly suitable for use on paper.
