FOCUS the requirement of a tolerance for residues of poly(oxy-1,2-ethanediyl), [alpha]-isotridecyl-[omega]-methoxy (CAS Reg No 345642-79-7) when used as an inert ingredient (surfactant) at a maximum concentration of 10% in pesticide formulations on growing crops only. Bayer CropScience submitted a petition to the EPA under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), requesting establishment of an exemption, which eliminates the need to establish a maximum permissible level for residues of the chemical. This regulation is effective 21 Jul 2010. Objections and requests for hearings must be received on or before 20 Sep 2010. MARKET REVIEWS C&T market on the rebound in 2010

Galderma patents foaming hair care treatment Swiss firm Galderma SA has been awarded Patent No US 7,700,081 B2 6

Following a rough two years, the C&T industry is on the path to recovery as suggested by the latest data from research companies Euromonitor and

Kline. A case study of the US market showed that skin care is the only category to expand, while the domestic personal care market was growing at a rate lower than the GDP. Skin care grew at an average 4%, the only category to enjoy growth despite the recession. In contrast, hair increased by only 1% and fragrance declined. The markets that managed to weather the recession are China, India and Indonesia, which made up 28% of growth in 2010. In the future, consumers will become more careful in how they spend their money, and developing economies, especially China, will be of particular interest. China will surpass the US by 2017, but spending attitudes will be rather different. Sales in China have not increased as they should have as Chinese people are known for their culture of saving. Kline notes that demand for natural/sustainable products continued to show slight but positive increases in 2008 and 2009 despite the recession. The company puts the global ingredient market at $10-15 bn, including both specialities and commodities, with green/natural products as defined by the feedstock used representing 20-30% of this market. Speciality ingredients maker Cognis said demand for its eco-sound solutions has demonstrated exceptional resilience. The main drivers are consumers who adhere to a lifestyle of health and sustainability; third party certification has become a critical tool for sustainable ingredients suppliers for reassuring consumers that their offerings meet recognized standards. This positive outlook of the market has prompted an increasing SEPTEMBER 2010
