Filled engineering thermoplastics

Literature available from Ferro Corp. in the USA,describes three filled engineering thermoplastic compounds. A mineral-filled compound from its Engineering Thermoplastics Div (Independence, Ohio) meets NSF guidelines for food-contact applications in the production of drink dispenser units. The precoloured specialty compound is formulated from Ferro’s Nybex line of polyamide-based resins. Ferrex high-gloss, mineral-filled polypropylene from the Filled & Reinforced Plastics Div, (Evansville, Ind) complies with FDA regulations for applications involving contact with food or liquids. Available precoloured, Ferrex also offers a high-gloss surface appearance, excellent part dimensional stability and is UL listed. The Horizon Polymers Div (Houston) offers an S-Series of hydrophilic polypropylene, available in melt flows ranging from 35 to 1500. In both homo~l~er and copolymer base, the SSeriesmaterials have expanded the versatility of olefm fibre in calendered and non-calendered web.

Colour concentrates

Data sheets from Reed Plastics Corp, Holden, Mass, USA describe the properties of a new line of multipurpose colour concentrates. OmniCoIor concentrates are said to work with all the low to moderate-temperature performance plastics e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon, acetal, polycarbonate, and EVA.

Fluorinated antioxidant

The Industrial Chemicals Div of Ethyl Corp, Baton Rouge, LA, USA has commercialized a unique fluorophosphonite secondary antioxidant. Trade-named Ethanox 398, it is non-hygroscopic and remains free-flowing in humid con~tio~. It is said to be unusually heat-stable. It costs about the same as other secondary antioxidants and offers similar cost-performance,

New supplier of fillers in USA

Fujimi America Inc, W~son~le, Ore, USA is marketing highpurity alumina and silica powders for use as fillers in plastics.

Analysis of fillers, etc.

CEM Corporation of North Carolina has introduced a microwave ashing system that will fully ash plastics at ~rn~rat~es up to 1200°C in 5 to 10 min. Plastic pellets, flakes, powders, fibres or small solid objects can all be analyzed. Fillers such as clay, titanium dioxide, glass, minerals, metals and carbon black can all be readily analyzed.
