Book Reviews Colposcopy Cervical Pathology, Textbook and Atlas, Third Edition. Edited by Erich Burghardt, Hellmuth Pickel, and Frank Girardi; translated by Andrew Ostor and Karl Tamussino. ISBN 0-86577-634-2, Stuttgart, Germany and New York, New York, Thieme, 1998, 344 pp. Reviewed by Sharmila Makhija, MD, Assistant Professor, Division of Gynecologic Oncology, MageeWomens Hospital/University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Colposcopy Cervical Pathology, Textbook and Atlas, edited by Burghardt, Pickel, and Girardi, is a 344page text and atlas whose goal is to provide information to physicians on examining and treating those patients with abnormal cervical lesions. The format of the book is similar to their earlier editions, with the present edition containing updated color photographs and an entire chapter devoted to colposcopy of the vulva. The introductory chapter includes a historical survey of cervical cancer which
leads the reader to the logical and present use of colposcopy. The subsequent chapters include basic histology correlated with colposcopic morphology with accompanying detailed descriptions and pictures. Terminology is discussed including the new Bethesda system. The authors address a vast amount of clinical situtations that the reader may encounter in evaluating and treating this group of patients. Cervical lesions discussed include normal, low-grade dysplasia, and invasive carcinomas, as well as how these same lesions would appear in the pregnant patient. Treatment options are discussed, as well as how to perform a conization, whether it be by cold-knife or laser. There is even a chapter on how the tissue, a small biopsy or a conization biopsy, is processed by the pathologist and how this affects the physician’s interpretation of the histology. The authors are extremely thorough and concise with the presentation of the material. I would recommend this book to those physicians who are either planning on or presently performing office colposcopy.
