News Notes W O R L D F E D E R A T I O N OF N E U R O S U R G I C A L SOCIETY An interim meeting of the Administrative Council of the WFNS was held in Windsor, United Kingdom, on November 18, 1990. The major items discussed were the budget of the Ninth Congress, the proposed budget of the Tenth Congress, proposed educational courses in Morocco and Argentina, and the long-term goals of the several WFNS Committees. The next meeting of the Administrative Council will be held on April 24, 1991, in New Orleans. WFNS Awards to Young Neurosurgeons The Congress will award five WFNS Awards to Young Neurosurgeons for the five best papers. This will be open to all neurosurgeons born after December 31, 1957. Each award will consist of an honorarium of US $1,500, a certificate, and complete waiver of registration fees along with accommodation for the Congress. The papers will be judged by a Committee and must contain original, unpublished work on basic research or clinical studies related to neurosurgery. Young neurosurgeons should submit eight copies of the manuscript (not more than ten double-spaced typewritten pages, exclusive of figures and tables) to: Albert L. Rhoton, Jr., M.D., Chairman Department of Neurological Surgery University of Florida College of Medicine Box J-265, J. H. Codman Paediatric Neurosurgical Prize The Scientific Committee on Paediatric Neurosurgery (Harold J. Hoffman, Chairman) has been able to secure a prize of $2000.00 from the Codman Company for the best paper on a paediatric neurosurgical topic to be given by a young neurosurgeon (under the age of 35 at the time of the Acapulco meeting). This is the first time that this prize has been offered and it is expected to become a regular event at the World Congresses in Neurological Surgery. The Scientific Committee on Paediatric Neurosurgery continues to endorse the annual international post-graduate course in paediatric neurosurgery, which will next be held in Birmingham, United Kingdom, May 13-17, 1991.

Dr. Gianaris presently is in private practice in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Neurosurgical Equipment Needed in Nepal Nepal, a country of over 17 million people, is in desperate need of neurosurgical equipment. There is virtually only one neurosurgery department for the whole country, run by Dr. D. Gongal and Dr. N.P. Devkota at the Bir Hospital, Kathmandu. Contact Dr. Edward P. Fellowship
A w a r d s f o r 1992 The Esther A. & Joseph Klingenstein Fund is pleased to announce its Fellowship Awards in the Neurosciences for 1992. The purpose of these awards is to support young investigators, in the early stages of their careers, engaged in basic or clinical research that may lead to a better understanding of the etiology, treatment, and prevention of epilepsy. In past years most applicants have been engaged in research at the molecular and cellular levels, and the Klingenstein Fund wishes to continue this emphasis. In addition, the Fund encourages work in systems neuroscience for the valuable perspective it offers to epilepsy research. Up to nine Klingenstein Fellows will be appointed in 1992, and each will receive an award of $100,000 over 3 years. Applicants must be Ph.D.s and/or M.D.s and have completed all research training, including postdoctoral training. Deadline for applications is October 15, 1991. For additional information write or call the Klingenstein Fund, 787 Seventh Avenue, 6th Floor, New York, N Y 10019-6016. Telephone (212) 492-6181. Survey of Fellowship Opportunities Available in Neurosurgical Centers in North America C a r o l G e r b y a n d J a m e s I. A u s m a n , M . D . , P h . D . , for The Society of Neurological Surgeons With the increasing development of subspecialization in neurosurgery, the number of postresidency fellowship opportunities has grown. It was important that those responsible for neurosurgery education and research know of these fellowship opportunities. Moreover, many neurosurgical residents and training program graduates from North America and other continents have asked for a listing of the Fellowship opportunities available to them in neurosurgery. The Council of The Society of Neurological Surgeons, representing the interests of neurosurgical education and research for North America, directed the Secretary of the Society (JIA) to compile a list of the fellowship opportunities available in neurosurgery in general and in subspecialty areas. Also, neurosurgical trainees and graduates from other continents are desirous of training opportunities in neurosurgery in North America. This information is difficult for them to obtain. These opportunities apply to those who have not obtained ECFMG certification allowing them to participate in clinical work but permit them to observe clinical activities and participate in conferences and research. In 1989, a request for information on fellowship opportunities was mailed to the Chairpersons of all neurosurgical training programs in North America. With only a 50% response, the Council of The Society of Neurological Surgeons directed the Secretary to resurvey the Chairpersons. This list
239
was circulated to all the Chairpersons of the training programs in March 1990 with a request that final corrections be made by the May meeting of the Society in Ann Arbor, Michigan. To enable those inquiring to write to the prospective programs easily, the addresses of each program were included at the suggestion of Dr. William Mosberg of the Foundation for International Education in Neurosurgery (FIENS) because of his experience with many from countries outside of North America who did not know whom to contact. This final list is a compilation of that effort. It is as complete as possible as of May 1990. It is possible that programs have added or deleted fellowship opportunities since that time or that some have not been mentioned. It is the Society's plan to publish this list yearly so that neurosurgeons will have an updated fellowship list available. Additions or corrections to this list should be mailed to James I. Ausman, M.D., Ph.D., Secretary, The Society of Neurological Surgeons, 2799 West Grand Blvd., Detroit, MI 48202. Mrs. Carol Gerby was instrumental in compiling this information. The Society appreciates the cooperation of Surgical Neurology in publishing this list for the benefit of all neurosurgeons.
