Communications interface for OEMs using the MC68000 The Semiconductor Products Division of Rockwell International Corporation has announced the R68C552, a communications interface designed for OEMs building systems utilizing the MC68000. The new product combines two UARTs (Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitters) on a single chip. Functioning as a program
controlled interface between 16 bit microprocessor-based systems and serial communication data sets and modems, the R68C552 eliminates the need to design individual adapters for each serial port. Two baud rate generators onboard the R68C552 enable users to simultaneously transmit and receive data at 15 different rates ranging from
Foreign file server for 68000 processor Newtons Laboratories has developed a foreign file server, called Fast/Net, for the 68000 processor which is now being released as an application system enabling systems integrators to network Intel-based products such as PCs and ATs. Any systems supporting DR-Net, not just PCs, can
be integrated with suitable network hardware. Using Fast/Net a trace facility enables developers to trap C-DOS file calls and direct them to screen, printer or disc file. This is an invaluable tool for program development, optimizing code and
IBM compatible token-ring baseband LAN A high performance, IEEE 802.5 IBM token-ring compatible, baseband I_AN for IBM PCs, XTs, ATs, PS/2-30s and compatible personal computers, has been launched by Gateway Communications. The G/Token-Ring features both a 16 bit PC/AT adapter board and a standard 8 bit adapter board. Through a ring topology, G/ Token-Ring workstations are attached to central office hubs, called Multi-station Access Units (MAUs), which are daisy-chained together throughout the system. Network nodes may be up to 150 feet from office MAUs. G/Token-Ring is also plugcompatible with the IBM token-ring network, allowing both IBM boards and the faster G/Token-Ring boards to coexist on the same network cable.

G/Token-Ring is a baseband network operating at a data rate of 4 Mbit/s over twisted pair cabling. Its token-passing access protocol assures deterministic data trans-
50 to 38 400 bit/s. Word lengths of 5-8 bit, the number of stop bits, and parity bit generation and detection can be preselected using the device's program controls. Although optimized for the MC68000 family, the R68C552 can be adapted for use with other 16 bit industry standard microprocessors such as Intel's 80286. (Rockwell

Program performance can be monitored in real-time on the screen or examined later. Fast/Net also allows programmers to develop their own extensions to the system. Additional routines may be incorporated to tailor the system for particular circumstances and modify the application of the slave/ master network. (Newtons Laboratories, PO Box 7 8 9 , 111-113

Fibre-optic interface An 8100 interface from Pilkington Communication Systems will enable the IBM 3640 Plant Communication Loop to be implemented on opticalfibre cable. This confers all the attendant advantages of optical fibre, including EMI immunity and increased loop length. The fibre-optic interface will offer data rates of up to 9.6kbit/s. The interface can be used with the IBM 3640 series communication equipment including printers, tape
streamers etc. Installation is simple, using the popular types of short haul signal cables including PCS 200 step index or 50/125 graded index types. Terminals are linked to the fibreoptic interface unit by way of conventional Loop Wiring Concentrators and/or Loop Station Connectors.
