A report from the AORN Board of Directors

O

n Jan. 25, 2013, the AORN Board of Directors conducted its first virtual board meeting, using webinar and conference call technology. All Board members participated, as did AORN executive staff members. During the meeting, the Board discussed the 2012 year-end financial results, the ambulatory line of business, the voting process for Congress 2013, the strategic plan for 201314, upcoming enhancements to ORNurseLink, and the process for approving position statements. The Board also discussed strategic plans for future AORN Congress events. Conference trends including attendance, expenses, and revenue were reviewed. Discussion also focused on feedback from members who have shared concerns about the lack of employer funding and difficulty in getting time off to attend Congress. In response, the Board approved condensing the length of Congress from five to four days, effective Congress 2014. The daily schedule of events will be structured to ensure that the current amount of exhibit floor hours and available continuing education credits will remain unchanged. The Board would like to thank those who participated in the two bylaws conference calls and the virtual town hall meeting prior to Congress. These meetings were excellent forums for obtaining member feedback and discussing ideas in preparation for the House of Delegates at Congress. We invite all members to participate in future face-to-face and virtual events.

From the Board

Share your nursing passion I recently attended an Judith L. AORN meeting Goldberg where the speaker encouraged us to share the moments in our careers that ignited our passion for nursing. For many of us, that passion is reignited by attending conferences, such as the recent AORN 60th Congress. The opportunities for education, networking, cultural and social activities, motivation, and inspiration were endless. Delegates and members engaged in spirited discussions related to the business of the association. General sessions, filled with thousands of perioperative nursing colleagues, provided a rush of emotions that was unparalleled. What ignites your passion? Think back to the moments in your career that inspired the nurse you are today, and then share that passion with the students and graduate nurses you encounter. It is important to the future of nursing that the new members of our profession work with nurses who exude passion and excitement for their chosen career. You won’t regret it!
