MicroporousLyon plastics Porvair has launched the Engel extrusion process range of microporous plastics in tubular or irregularshaped profiles for filtration, aeration and geo-technical applications. The extruded Vyon porous profiles, developed in conjunction with specialists in areas such as the water treatment and geo-technical industries, are available in a range of porosities in sizes up to 125 mm diameter. Porvair has already identified applications in numerous industries throughout the world for this versatile UHMWpolyethylene. vjron extrusions exhibit high air flow characteristics and UHMW polyethylene offers exceptional chemical resistance and practical operating temperatures from -60 to 80°C. The naturally hydrophobic material can be made

Activatedporous heating elements A new development in porous electrical heating elements where the fibrous carbon element can be activated, allows adsorption of contaminants onto its surface. Desorption can then be achieved by powering up the element. Porous elements are made from synthetic fibres which, after extensive processing, result in carbon and ceramic elements that are very compact, ultra-responsive, extremely efficient and resistant to chemical attack

Comprehensive slurry-handling publication Edited by Dr. Nigel Brown, of British Petroleum and Dr Nigel Heywood, of the Warren Spring Laboratory, Stevenage, UK, Slurry Handling: Design of Solid-Liquid Systems provides guidance on the design of systems to handle and transport slurries, together with comprehensive information on slurry properties and ilow behaviour. In 668 pages the handbook focuses on system design and does not attempt to give guidance on the design of process equipment. Design of slurry systems, requires the Filtration8 Separation

hydrophilic if required for particular applications. Vyon extrusions are fibrefree and very strong. Their rigid form is manufactured to close tolerances but the material remains ductile and can be post-formed to give 1O:l r/d bends without appreciable change to its pore structure or profile collapse. This self-supporting feature is highly significant in that it will replace more complex assemblies at a fraction of the cost. It is readily available in lengths up to 3m, although longer sections are only limited by transport considerations. Extruded Vyon can be machined and fabricated and can be easily welded either to itself or to HDPE. Porvair, Riverside industrial Estate, Estuary Road, King’s Lynn, Norfolk PE30 2HS, UK. An immense surface area (500 m’/g) is contained within the extremely compact fibrous permeable element through which the liquids, vapours or gases to be treated are passed radially. With very low thermal inertia, start-up and cooling are virtually instantaneous. Temperatures can be easily held at + 1°C by thyristor and thermocouple control, giving high-speed response and temperature accuracy.
