BOOK REVIEW

Concise Encyclopedia of Composite Materials edited by Anthony Kelly CBE IRS, Pergamon Press PLC, Headington Hill Hall, Oxford, OX3 OBW, United Kingdom, (c75, $135). The scope and arrangement of this vofume are best described by the opening sentences of its introduction. “This Concise Encyclopedia is a comprehensive reference work covering all aspects of composite materials. Information is presented in a series of alphabetically arranged articles which deal concisely with individual tonics in a self-contained manner”. Each article occupies about five pages of text and is written by an expert on the subject. There are three articles which will be of special interest to readers of CARBON. They are ‘Carbon-Carbon Composites’, ‘Carbon-FiberReinform-Pl~tic~, and ‘Carbon Fibers’. There are of course many other con~butions which will also be of interest, such as ‘Thermosetting Resin Matries’,

‘Toughness of Fibrous Composites’, ‘Fiber Reinforced Cements’, ‘Creep of Composites’, and ‘Aircraft and Aerospace Applications of Composites’. As is normal for a book of this nature, not all articles are of the same quality or interest, and some are more up-to-date than others. However the book serves a very useful function for those about to enter into research on composites or who wish to expand their work into other composite materials. Each article is followed bv a very useful bibliography which should serve as a good entree to the relevant literature. The book is nicely produced and relatively good value for books of this type nowadays. Peter A. Thrower ofmaterials Science Penn State U~iver~i~ ~~iv~rsi~ Park, PA 16802 U.S.A.
