It is a s c a t t e r e d l i g h t d e v i c e , in w h i c h l i g h t f r o m t h e i n t e n s e s o u r c e in t h e s e n d e r u n i t irradiates particles in t h e gas, and the s c a t t e r e d r e f l e c t e d l i g h t is collected by a sensor mounted at a set a n g l e to t h e gas channel• The o u t p u t e l e c t r o n i c s u n i t calculates t h e p a r t i c u l a t e c o n centration and the Bacharach n u m b e r by c o m p a r i n g t h e original light i n t e n s i t y w i t h t h a t of the reflected light. Awards for 'clean technology' Two environmental awards for its l o w w a s t e g a s - p h a s e polyethylene production process (the BP f l u i d bed process) have been w o n by BP C h e m i cals SNC. The prizes, f o r t h e p r o c e s s at its L a v e r a plant, n e a r M a r seilles, France, w e r e e a c h in 'Clean Technology' categories. T h e c o m p a n y w o n t h e first in t h e '1990 E u r o p e a n Better E n v i r o n m e n t A w a r d s for Industry' and s e c o n d prize in the affiliated F r e n c h c o m petition, "Enterprise et Environnement'. P o l y e t h y l e n e w a s first prod u c e d at t h e L a v e r a p l a n t in 1958• S u b s e q u e n t l y a n e w catalyst w a s d e v e l o p e d w h i c h , through catalyst recovery, r e d u c e d d i s c h a r g e s of a l c o h o l resulting f r o m t h e o r i g i n a l p r o d u c t i o n process. T h e catalyst is a t i t a n i u m / m a g n e s i u m salt a c t i v a t e d b y a l u m i n i u m alkyl. The BP C h e m i c a l gas p h a s e t e c h n o l o g y , d e v e l o p e d t o utilise this catalyst, w h i c h w o n the E u r o p e a n prize, is said a l m o s t c o m p l e t e l y to e l i m i nate chemical oxygen d e m a n d (COD) in effluent, reduce hydrocarbon emissions by 96% a n d solid w a s t e by 70%, a n d h a l v e e l e c t r i c i t y consumption.
