Drylabvacuumpumpsystem Water jet pumps, still used in many laboratories, have enormous water consumption, because they often have to be used for hours on end, moreover the water used may be contaminated with solvent vapours. The Drylab universally applicable, laboratory vacuum pump system is designed to be a good alternative to the jet pump. Typical applications are in chemical laboratories for vacuum production in equipment such as rotary evaporators and drying chambers. The principal components of the Drylab system are a diaphragm pump,
with two PI’FE-coated diaphragms able to resist corrosive media, an emission condenser, and a controller with an operating pressure display. Advantages are no contamination of cooling water, lubricants, ultimate pressure of 10 mbar and pumping speed of 2.4 m3/hr. Other features include solvent recovery, boiling pressure adjustment, freely programmable pressure control system, venting via a single valve, and portability for use on location. Countersfor monitoringcontamination Aberdeen-based AFOS International uses Malvern’s ALPS 100 particle counting system to determine solids content of clear fluids during filtration operations. During workover and completions, water and brines are checked to ensure that solids are removed by filtration prior to the fluid entering the well. The solids content and particle size distribution are especially critical when the reservoir has a low permeability, or during water injection. AFOS International was impressed by the ALPS 100, the flexibility
to tailor the output from the instrument without altering the software or recalibrating the instrument, and to present the data obtained in either tubular or graphical display. The menu-driven software allows for ease of use by the engineer offshore. AFOS, in conjunction with Malvem Instruments, has developed special software which allows the instrument to display the results in parts per million. LatestEconosievedevelopment Cough & Co has introduced the Econosieve range of sieving machines incorporating light-gauge deckware. They are available in 18, 24, 30, 48 and 60 inch diameters, and offer the facility of up to four screens, for five fractions on one machine. Mesh/frame assemblies feature spot-welded meshes on a rolled-steel frame for processes where mesh failure or frequent change will not occur, but for customers requiring fine meshes, where mesh life will inevitably be Filtration h Separation

short, an optional re-meshable mesh/frame assembly is offered. A significant Econosieve design feature is that it offers complete interchangeability with key parts of imported machines, eliminating the need to hold expensive spares. Oil/waterseparatorsprotectenvironment Discharging oil-contaminated compressor condensate from aftercoolers, air receivers, filters and dryers directly into open drains, public sewers or natural water courses is extremely hazardous to the environment, and often illegal. As a result many national and local environmental regulations exist to strictly limit the discharge of trade effluent, including oil-contaminated condensate. The solution is HzOIL-X, a simple, inexpensive and efficient oil/water separator developed by Domnick Hun-
ter. Clean water, up to 99.9% of the total condensate, is separated from oil contamination, to be safely discharged into conventional drains, leaving a small amount of concentrated oil to be disposed of legitimately and economically. With capacities to suit all applications, these separators require no power and are simple to instal, operate and maintain, and are made from recyclable ma’ trials. Radial-pleated filter cartridge 3M Filtration Products is introducing a liquid filter cartridge featuring a Compound Radial Pleat that provides up to 40 times more surface area for particle removal than standard 10 inch length pleated cartridges. The new cartridge is designed for prefiltration and final filtration of particles at high flow rates in a wide range of environmental, water treatment, and oil and gas applications. It is also designed for single or multiple cartridge vessels. With its larger surface area, the Series 700B highcapacity liquid filter cartridge has a large loading capacity at flow rates as high as 40 gal/min per cartridge. The larger capacity extends filter life and reduces costs associated with changes and disposal. The cartridge has more than 200 ft2 of melt-blown polypropylene microfibre media, which is highly efficient at removing particles as small as 1 pm. The compound radial pleat design stacks the pleats of the media horizontally, which provides a greater media surface area than filter cartridges with traditional vertical pleats. This allows the entire cartridge, which is 40 inches long and 7 inches in diameter, to be filled with media, giving it a higher
loading capacity and longer life. With the larger diameter and horizontal pleating, one Series 700B cartridge provides as much media as 10 traditional 40 inch length pleated cartridges. At the same time, fewer inner cores, outer sleeves and end caps reduce disposal costs. To illustrate cost savings for disposal, removal of 100 lb of dirt would require 27 lb of Series 700 B filters, compared to more than 600 lb of traditional stringwound cartridges. The Series 700B has double O-ring seals in a variety of material options. These simpliiy installation and greatly reduce the risk of contaminant bypass, compared to knife-edge seals. The cartridge has heavyduty, built-in handles for easy changes, and all loose parts, such as threaded rods, caps and springs, have been eliminated from the design. At replacement, the used cartridge can be incinerated, subject to state and local regulations regarding disposal of liquid or contaminant involved. The Series 700B consists of four micron ratings, offering 99% efficiency for particle sizes 2, 5, 10 and 15 pm. ?IMFXUr&ionProducts, Building 76-lW-04, 3M Center, St. Paul, MN 55144-1000, USA.
