Abstract: The topics of recovering of materials, quality control, and environmental impact have gained a raising attention in industrial activities, in order to enforce the quality parameters imposed by the new laws. An innovative approach to control and optimisation of the manufacturing process becomes necessary to cut the industrial costs. For this reason, the interest for the intelligent methods for monitoring and control several process phases has been growing since 80 's. This paper deals with the development a Neuro-Fuzzy (NF) system for the corrosion control in Pulp & Paper production. Furthermore, the performance of the NF expert system has been compared with that of the classical Neural Network MLPs (NN) . the product quality, and environmental damages. In this paper a Neuro-Fuzzy system for the online prediction of the corrosion potential value (AISI316) in a pulp and paper plant has been realised. The available set of measured data has been collected in the monitoring system installed at the VTT Manufacturing Technology site in Espoo , Finland . The results show that the obtained NF expert systems improve the capability with respect to NN prediction models . The results are very satisfactory especially when NF methodologies have been adopted . In this last case a great model accuracy, together with a dramatic reduction of the number of input parameters with respect to the NN approach (J. Angstenberger, 1998) have been achieved .
Pulp & Paper production within the chemical process industry is a well established industrial activity in the European market . As it consists in a niultifunction and multiobjective production, this leads to a great complexity in the plant and . in the process. Automation of fabric level control and monitoring become, therefore , relevant needs in order to achieve costs reduction and increase of competitivity of the industry. One of the problems in a chemical process is the impact of the chemical agents in the production machinery and in the final product. Particularly, in a pulp mill corrosion phenomena may take place during the ozonebleaching phase, given that, ozone, currently used as a bleaching chemical agent of pulp, is a strong oxidising agent. Unexpected corrosion phenomena can actually modify the production equipment, causing sudden changes in the plant parameters. The aim of this work is to realise an expert system for the control of the corrosion phenomena in order to avoid unscheduled downtime, detriment of
