This will include about six pumps, motors, variable frequency drives, electrical supply, controls and appurtenances to provide a capacity in the region of 180 mgd. Operation is expected by early 2005.
JACOBS CHOSEN FOR CLEAN WATER PROGRAMME A subsidiary of Jacobs Engineering Group Inc has been selected by Gwinnett County’s Department of Public Utilities (DPU) in Georgia, USA to provide programme management services for DPU’s five-year, US$1.4 billion Capital Improvements Program (CIP). The goal of the CIP, which encompasses around 200 water and wastewater projects, is to establish a high-quality, efficient delivery process. DPU’s mission is to provide Gwinnett County clean, potable water, and to collect and reclaim Gwinnett’s wastewater to protect the environment. DPU’s Engineering & Construction Division is responsible for the design and construction of new DPU facilities and for upgrades to existing DPU facilities. The Engineering & Construction Division also administers construction contracts for water and wastewater facilities and pipelines, contracts to move utility lines during government road projects and private development projects, and acquires land for utility construction projects. Jacobs will manage accomplishing these objectives. Jacobs is now negotiating detailed scope of the five-year contract with Gwinnett officials.

PULP & PAPER MERCER COMPLETES MILL FINANCING Mercer International Inc has completed financing arrangements for its Stendal Pulp Mill greenfield project to construct and operate a 552 000 tonne per year kraft pulp mill to be located in Arneburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Following the recent approval by the European Union for around 250 million in support and subsidies from the German government, the Stendal Pulp Mill Project, which is a 64% owned subsidiary of Mercer, recently entered into an approximately 828 million senior secured credit facility arranged by HypoVereinsbank of Munich, Germany. The Stendal mill is one of the most prominent industrial projects in Eastern Germany. It will be located in one of Europe’s most important pulp markets, and will produce a highly marketable pulp end product. In terms of manufacturing costs, the Stendal mill is projected to be one of the most cost competitive market NBSK producers in the world. This is especially true in Europe, where it will enjoy a very competitive position with regards to its wood and distribution costs. Construction of the Stendal mill has begun, and is expected to be completed in 2004.
KVAERNER SECURES PULP & PAPER BOILER ORDERS Kvaerner’s Pulp & Paper business has been awarded two contracts to supply boilers and boiler rebuilds for mills in Europe.
The Power division is to supply a Hybex power boiler to Norske Skog Parenco BV recycling newsprint mill in the Netherlands. The boiler to be supplied will use bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) technology and will have the capacity for firing about 400 tons of dry solids per day. The boiler will burn both sludge and rejects from the de-inking plant and the wastewater treatment plant. The new product will be ready for commissioning in February 2004. The Portucel Soporcel Group has placed an order for boiler rebuilds on their Figueira da Foz and Setubal pulp and paper mills in Portugal. The existing barkfired boilers will be converted to Kvaerner’s BFB technology to meet the customer’s demands on environmental performance and operation parameters. The Setubal boiler starts up in Spring 2003 and the Figueira da Foz delivery, which also includes an electrostatic filter, will be commissioned in the late summer of 2003.
ELECTRONICS CHINESE CHIP FAB GETS THE GO-AHEAD ON Semiconductor plans to expand its joint venture operation in Leshan, making it the first foreign company to introduce 6-inch wafer manufacturing in western China. The company recently obtained approval from the Chinese government for the Leshan-Phoenix Semiconductor Co Ltd joint venture to invest up to US$231 million for semiconductor operations. Leshan is located in the Sichuan province near to Chengdu, the provincial capital city. ON Semiconductor and joint venture partner Leshan Radio Co plan to first produce
advanced metal oxide semiconductor devices and progressively introduce more sophisticated analogue technologies down to 0.25 micron following the completion of the expansion effort. Leshan-Phoenix produces more than 10 billion chips per year and has been the largest foreign investment enterprise in Sichuan province as well as one of its largest electronics exporters.
CHIPPAC TO DOUBLE CHINESE MANUFACTURING CAPACITY ChipPAC Inc plans to more than double its manufacturing capacity in China, the world’s fastest-growing semiconductor market. The new facility at ChipPAC’s site in the Qingpu District of Shanghai will be in excess of 300 000 square feet. Construction will begin in the fourth quarter of this year, with production expected to begin in the third quarter of 2003. SEMI, the international semiconductor trade association, says that China plans to build between 14 and 20 new wafer fabs by 2010, ChipPAC reported.
HVAC ABB WINS HVAC REVAMP ABB has been chosen to revamp the complete HVAC system at Oil and Natural Gas Corp Ltd (ONGC) in Mumbai High, India. The project includes the system design through commissioning on a turnkey basis. The order comprises engineering for the system, installation, commission and hook up, post commissioning services, and on-the-job training for ONGC’s personnel.
