This report reviews briefly the research undertaken during the year 1975 in the following areas: Applied geomechanics and the civil and mining engineering industries, Participation in national and international geomechanics activities; Urban and regional engineering; Mining engineering; Coastland and offshore engineering; Defect structure mechanics of earthen materials; Interactive stressdeformation responses-structures and earthen masses. Support research, staff members and publications by the Division are noted.

This ELSE _ Ciba Foundation guide takes authors of any nationality (including Brit. ish and American) step by step through the preparation of an article in ~nglish for publication in a scientific Journal. Although the examples and orientation are biological, the principles described apply to every branch of science. The book provides both experienced and inexperienced writers with practical advice on what to submit for publication, when to submit it and where; how to prepare and construct the different parts of a paper especially tables, illustrations and reference lists; and how to write effectively about the material presented. The book also advises authors on how to obtain criticism of their manuscripts; how to type the paper and check the typing; what to write to the Journal editor when submitting a typescript - and what to do if he returns it; and, finally, how to correct the proofs of an article that has been accepted and is about to be published.
