25% fall in net profit forecast for AkzoNobel in 1Q 2012 Analysts are forecasting a 25% decrease in net profit to €99.4 M for Akzo Nobel in 1Q 2012, and a 2.4% increase in turnover to €3.85 bn. The analysts attribute the decrease in profit to higher raw material prices and increased interest payments resulting from higher net debts. AkzoNobel is expected to focus on operational streamlining and an improvement in profitability. Fanning the flames of innovation: AkzoNobel AkzoNobel’s new €7.1 M first protection laboratory at Felling, UK, was inaugurated in 2011 and is essentially a purpose-built, selfcontained product development and testing facility. Everything is done in-house, from procuring raw materials and making products to testing them in a range of furnaces and conditions. This enables the company to undertake a lot more simulation so that when it seeks outside approval for a product, it has already got a lot more awareness, knowledge and confidence. The next step is to gain UKAS (UK Accreditation Service) certification to run tests to global standards and so become an independent tester. There will have to be a clear split between product development and support and the fire-testing teams and it must be objective. No other protective paints or coatings company in the world JUNE 2012

has this level of facility so it will set it apart. In 2011, a new AkzoNobel Powder Coatings laboratory also opened on the site. One of the big innovations is to be able to replicate exactly climate conditions in the laboratory. This enables the company to deliver better products that are exactly suited to customers’ needs. Matte paints for car coatings are becoming very popular. AkzoNobel has designed one-shot powder matte which simplifies the process and gives better results. The initial work has been completed and the company is now ready to scale up the trials. In the event of a problem, the Felling laboratory also enables the company to replicate customers’ set-ups to help identify the problem and develop a solution. C O AT I N G S Cytec announces update to operating segments Cytec Industries Inc (Cytec) announced a change in its business segment reporting structure. The new reporting structure is effective in 1Q 2012 and provides greater clarity on the new strategic focus of the company. It also aligns with the separation alternatives under consideration for Coating Resins and Pressure Sensitive Adhesives. All product lines within the scope of the separation evaluation are now under common management and grouped into one financial reporting segment. Going forward, Cytec’s reportable operating segments will be as follows: The Engineered Materials segment now includes only the Advanced Composites, Carbon Fibre, and Structural Film Adhesives product lines. The Pressure Sensitive Adhesives product line has been consolidated within the Coating Resins segment. The In Process Separation segment is unchanged, and includes the Mining Chemicals and Phosphines product lines. The Additive Technologies segment previously included the Polymer Additives and Speciality Additives product lines and now includes the Formulated Resins product line. The Formulated Resins product line was previously included in the Engineered Materials segment. The Coating Resins segment includes the following product lines: Radiation-Cured Resins (Radcure Resins), Liquid Coating Resins and Additives (including Waterborne Resins, Solventborne Resins, and Urethane Resins), Powder Coating Resins, Amino Crosslinkers and Pressure Sensitive Adhesives. Pressure Sensitive Adhesives was previously included in the Engineered Materials segment. Cytec Industries’ vision is to deliver speciality chemical and 5

fluorine-based architectural coatings. Roberto Cavalieri, Associate Scientist at Cytec, will discuss new findings about the use of hyperdurable powder coating resins as a suitable option at the upcoming Architectural Coatings Conference. Powder coatings based on superdurable polyester represent the state-of-the-art for architectural coatings. However, in regions with high UV exposure such as in the US, South East Asia and Middle East, fluorinebased liquid or powder coatings are the preferred technology. Cytec is developing alternative routes in order to overcome the relatively higher cost and application limitations of fluorine-based resins while targeting powder paints with improved weathering resistance. Lubrizol launches Lanco 1580 LF polyethylene wax for the wood coatings industry The Lubrizol Corp has introduced Lanco 1580 LF, a hard, highmelting, polyethylene wax ideal for inclusion in coatings for wood furniture and fixtures to enhance surface protection. Lanco1580 LF offers several key advantages including excellent scratch and abrasion resistance when used in paints and other coatings for wood finishes. This new additive’s benefits extend to improved uniform matting, heightened polishing and metal marking resistance, increased surface slip, and - because of its high melting point (120 to 126°C) - improved blocking resistance. “We are very pleased to respond to our customers’ requests and bring this valuable component to the wood coatings industry,” said Dr Peter Bloyce, global business manager for Lubrizol Performance Coatings. “Lanco 1580 LF is an exceptionally effective and efficient solution created to address many of the issues the

C O AT I N G S industry faces every day in boosting the integrity of wood finishes. We believe its performance will help elevate the quality and consistency of our customers’ coating products.” Lanco 1580 LF is highly versatile and designed for use in a variety of applications including water-based, solvent-based, and radiation-cured systems. Depending on a customer’s requirements, it can be formulated for acrylics, polyurethanes, alkyds and urethane alkyds, polyesters, NC and NC combination systems and epoxy, polyester, and hybrid powder resin systems. In addition, it is easily dispersed using lowspeed mixers; high-energy dispersers may be advantageous when used with low-viscosity varnishes and water-based systems. Lanco is a trademark of The Lubrizol Corp.
