Danica Pension invests millions in Aquaporin

I

n Denmark, Danica Pension A/s is investing millions in cleantech company Aquaporin A/s as part of the pension provider’s focus on direct investments in healthy and well-run companies. ‘We are excited about this opportunity to invest in a well-run business as part of our strategy to invest double-digit billion Danish Krone directly in businesses in Denmark and other Nordic countries in the coming years. We all know that clean water is a scarce resource,’ said Lars Thørs, head of risk assets at Danica Pension. He continued: ‘Aquaporin’s huge growth potential is driven by growing global demand for clean water, coupled with a thoroughly tested product that requires a limited amount of material and is easily integrated into existing products. We are making this investment because we are confident that it will add value to our customer’s savings. This is what motivates us to seek out investments with the highest and most secure returns.’ Aquaporin was founded in 2005. It currently has 36 employees and is managed by CEO Peter Holme Jensen. Jensen commented: ‘The world’s population is expected to exceed nine billion in 2050, and two-thirds of the population will be living in the major cities. This helps to illustrate the importance of being able to supply clean drinking water to a population expected to grow by 35% over the next 35 years.’

‘Our mission is to develop and produce a membrane that is capable of separating and purifying water from all other compounds. With Danica Pension’s investment we are now backed by a strong investor, which represents a seal of approval and enables us to concentrate on what we do best. We are therefore excited about this new arrangement which, we expect, will have excellent benefits for both parties.’ Thørs continued: ‘Taking a minority stake in Aquaporin is consistent with our strategy of providing capital for healthy businesses with strong management. Aquaporin’s potential is further underpinned by the partnership it has entered into with two Chinese companies (see Membrane Technology December 2014, page 1) that we believe will contribute expertise and in-depth knowledge of the world’s largest market and its rapidly growing demand for water and water purification products. We see great potential in our investment, and the unique technology and low material costs help reduce the risk of loss.’ Contacts: Aquaporin A/s, Ole Maaløes Vej 3, DK-2200 Copenhagen N, Denmark.
