Using simple theories for the criteria of failure for rock in coml~ession and tension, general elastic theory for stress concentration arou~l openings amd in structures, beam theory for stability of roof rock, ard elementary inelastic theory for creep phencmer~, basic design techniques are outlined for the various rock classifications. The need far field evaluation of %he theoretical design is stressed and some general techniques that should be used in these field evaluations are discussed. Where appropriate, the need for ndd~tior~l studies and research is noted. Auth.

Ch~ha, S N In: Monograph i on Rock Mechanics Applications in Mining (New York: AIME, 1977), P223-227 Reports a comparative study of methods of analysis and design of concrete linimg for umdergrour~l openings in rock. Concludes that a ldimensional stiffness matrix approach gives satisfactery results for amnl ! openimgs, but for large openings and when the rock quality is questionable, finite element analysis is warr8_~.

The assumed shape of the failure surface approximates closely the one give in published results obtained by the method of characteristics. The simplicity of the cone permits an investigation of a ~ h e r Of parameters, e.g. the earth pressure coefficient on radial planes, which turns out to be a decisive parameter in the amalysis, and accounts fer the widely differing published values for earth pressures on shaft limings.
