We use a nonoverlapping iterative domain decomposition procedure based on the Robin interface condition to develop a new multiscale mixed method to compute the velocity field in heterogeneous porous media. Hybridized mixed finite elements are used for the spatial discretization of the equations. We define local, multiscale mixed basis functions to represent the discrete solutions in subdomains. Appropriate subspaces of the vector space spanned by these basis functions can be considered in the numerical approximations of heterogeneous porous media flow problems. The balance between numerical accuracy and numerical efficiency is determined by the choice of these subspaces. A detailed description of the numerical method is presented. Following that, numerical experiments are discussed to illustrate the important features of the new procedure and its comparison to the traditional fine grid simulations.

1. Introduction
We are concerned with the development of numerical procedures for the fast and accurate approximation of subsurface flows that can take advantage of heterogeneous (e.g., CPU-GPU clusters) processing units. Such units are relatively inexpensive and have larger computational power (by one or two orders of magnitude) than CPUs alone. In the case of second order elliptic equations, multiscale procedures have the potential to fit well within the above mentioned heterogeneous computational environments because GPUs can be efficiently used to solve many small local problems that are posed by such procedures. We present a new multiscale method based on a nonoverlapping iterative domain decomposition for mixed finite elements introduced in [10]. Domain decomposition techniques for mixed methods distinct from the one used here can be found in, e.g., [5, 8, 12, 13, 16, 15].

The development of multiscale numerical procedures for second order elliptic equations arising in porous media flow problems has attracted the attention of several research groups. We refer the reader to the recent publications [7, 11] and [17] for references and also a very comprehensive comparison of several procedures of this type. More recent developments include [19] along with [14] among many others. In [14] the authors make use of the concept of a multiscale flux basis. A similar concept will be used in this work. In the work presented here we define an iterative domain decomposition algorithm taking advantage of multiple grids and a new family of local basis functions to approximate large problems efficiently. The new procedure has some distinctive properties:

• Three length scales are introduced in the definition of the procedure: the solution is sought in the finest scale (h); multiscale basis functions are defined in the subdomains associated with the coarsest scale (H). Flux conservation is directly imposed on an intermediate scale (H with h ≤ H ≤ H). If H = h the new method produces the mixed finite element solution in the finest scale.

• The approximation is locally conservative at the H scale through the use of mixed finite elements. Discontinuous coefficients and source terms can be naturally handled.

• A post-processing step is introduced to recover the solution in the fine grid, given the solution with flux conservation at the H scale. A downscaling procedure ensures local conservation at the h scale.

• The implementation of the iterative scheme, which is based on the Robin interface conditions imposed on the intermediate scale, is straightforward and converges fast.

• The procedure fits well in heterogeneous processing units (CPU-GPU): all the local problems can be efficiently solved in GPUs. These local problems are relatively small and fit in the GPU memory. Moreover, the iterative procedure associated with the global problem in a coarse grid takes place only at the boundaries of the coarse grid blocks, and can also run in GPUs. This paper is organized as follows. In section §2 we describe the mixed formulation of the elliptic problem considered in this work, next we give a step-by-step formulation of the new multiscale mixed method (MuMM), first introducing a discretization by hybridized mixed finite elements and a modified Robin condition, followed by the description of the MuMM iteration. In section §3 the computational implementation is described: multiscale basis functions of Robin type are introduced and a post-processing step is discussed. Section §4 provides several numerical results for the new method. Finally, section §5 contains our concluding remarks.

As indicated in Fig. 1, we refer to three length scales in the description of the new multiscale procedure: H, the mesh size for the coarse partition; h, the mesh size of an underlying fine grid and H, an intermediate length scale (h ≤ H ≤ H). The Multiscale Mixed Method gives an approximate solution to (2.2-2.3) in that the continuity of the pressure and normal component of the flux are imposed on the intermediate scale H (in terms of averages of fine scale Lagrange multipliers and normal components of fluxes, respectively) along the edges of the coarse partition Ωc . Flux conservation at the finest scale is obtained after a downscaling step. For a typical situation, imposing these conditions allow for the construction of a global linear equations governing the Lagrange multipliers (see for example, [1, 4]). In relative comparison to the traditional mixed finite element method, this hybridization technique has a clear advantage of reducing the system dimension. Another advantage is that the resulting global matrix from the hybridization is positive definite. Still, for problems such as multiphase flow in heterogeneous porous media, construction of a global matrix is prohibitive and may have to be avoided. In [10], the core of the iterative procedure was built by substituting `jk in (2.7) by the one in (2.10) with uk and `kj treated as known previous iteration values from the neighboring elements. The multiscale method we propose in this paper follows a closely related iterative procedure. The main distinction is that our method employs a red-black iterative procedure and an inclusion of information from intermediate scale through appropriate construction of local problems. We now define an iterative procedure that localizes the calculations and gives an approximate solution to the global problem (2.6-2.7). Consider the domain Ω and label its coarse partitions as “red” and “black” in an ordinary checkerboard order. The iterative process is listed in Algorithm 1 where we have assumed to use the hybridized mixed finite element approximation for solving the local problem (2.12) and (2.13). In essence, either red or black calculation in Algorithm 1 is represented by the schematic in Fig. 2. 3. Computational Implementation
In our numerical experiments we shall adopt the lowest order Raviart-Thomas elements and we consider this space in the discussion of the new scheme. The natural degrees of freedom on the element Ωfj , where the elements are squares of side length h, are the (constant) value pj of the pressure over Ωfj , which can be interpreted as the value at the center of the element, and the four (constant) values ujβ , β = l, r, b, t, of the outward normal component of the total flux across the edges of the element.

The Lagrange multipliers `jk and `kj on Γfjk are also constants. We shall also assume that the absolute permeability K(x) and the external flow rate q to be constant on each element. However, it is obvious that Algorithm 1 can easily become an expensive calculation especially when the dimension of the local calculation in Ωcm increases significantly. This is even more pronounced when it is applied to multiphase flow simulations that require repeated calculations of pressure and velocity and hence repeated algorithm calls. For that matter, it is imperative to devise an innovative way to be incorporated in Algorithm 1 that allows for efficient calculation and yet maintains an acceptable accuracy. Our strategy in this direction is to construct a set of multiscale basis functions associated with Ωcm . Calculation of these basis functions is a one time preprocessing step and thus is reasonable to expend. Furthermore, with these basis functions in place, the iteration procedure of Algorithm 1 is only conducted on ∂Ωcm . In the next subsection, we describe the aforementioned basis functions.

Downscaling As mentioned above, after convergence the flux conservation is maintained in the H scale. In order to have the flux conservation in the h scale, we employ a two-step procedure. We first solve local Neumann problems to recover the solution inside each element of Ωc . The boundary condition for these problems specified in the h scale is set to be the average flux produced by the MuMM iteration at the boundaries between two neighbor elements of Ωc . Next we solve a family of local Neumann problems in a staggered grid. Fig. 4 illustrates this procedure. After this step we recover an approximate solution in the fine scale. The computational cost of the downscaling is equivalent to the contruction of one MMBF, in both cases we solve one elliptic problem for each subdomain. R EMARK : Although the procedure has been defined for uniform structured grids, we believe that it could be implemented on more complicated (non-uniform or unstructured) grids. Such implementations are, however, outside the scope of this work.

4. Numerical Results

In order to show that MuMM is a viable alternative to solve reservoir simulation problems, we present numerical results for the simulation of two-dimensional fluid flows associated with two cases, namely, quarter of a 5-spot problem and a slab geometry on a channelized field. In all simulations, we compare the MuMM with the usual traditional simulation on the mesh in which the fine scale permeability field is resolved. Aspects of comparison include the accuracy of the approximate velocity, efficiency of MuMM in terms of number of iterations to reach a convergence tolerance, and the robustness of MuMM when incorporated in a single phase flow simulation. With respect to this single phase flow simulation, the model governs the physical transport of fluids that uses the approximate velocity as an input to the equation ∂c + u · ∇c = 0. ∂t

Example 1: The quarter of a 5-spot problem This is a standard problem in reservoir simulation and thus it is an important example to evaluate the performance of the MuMM. In this simulation the global fine grid is of 128 × 128 elements in the region (0, 1) × (0, 1). The global boundary condition is of Neumann type (with no flow on the boundary), and there is an injection through a well at the lower left corner of the computational domain, and a production, at the same rate, through a well in the upper right corner. The experiment uses a 2-D heterogeneous permeability whose log value field ξ(x) is shown in Fig. 5. We set k(x) = exp(δ ξ(x)), where δ is chosen in order to set a high permeability ratio kmax /kmin = 106 . In Fig. 6 we show concentration profiles at two different PVIs, in which the velocity used in the left plots is from the direct fine grid calculation using the iterative procedure from [10], while its counterpart in the right plots is from the MuMM with coarse grid of 4 × 4 elements (i.e., H = 1/4, and thus making each coarse element Ωcm to possess 32 × 32 fine elements). We use H = 1/16, which gives dim{Ψi,H mn } = 4H/H = 4 · 4 = 16, i.e., there are 16 MMBFs per coarse element. An additional basis function has to be constructed for lower left and upper right coarse element in which the injection and production well is respectively located. Each of these extra basis functions is defined with trivial Robin conditions that takes the source/sink terms into account. The comparison in Fig. 6 indicates that the MuMM produces a good quality numerical approximation of the solution in the fine grid. As described, the aforementioned simulations take the approximate velocity on the fine grid as an input, so maintaining a satisfactory level of its accuracy is imperative. Further investigation of the relative error spatial profile for MuMM approximation depicted in Fig. 7 confirms the previous finding. where k . k is the usual Euclidean norm. Simulation to create this figure uses a fixed H = 1/16 and varying H = 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, respectively having 8 × 8, 16 × 16, and 32 × 32 fine elements in each coarse element. Consequently, we maintain a fixed total number of 64 MMBFs on the whole domain. We note that the maximum relative error in each of the plots from left to right is respectively 0.15, 0.08, and 0.019. This result suggests that when the total number of MMBFs remains fixed on the whole domain, the accuracy is better when the H scale is coarser but at the expense of having a larger degrees of freedom in each multiscale basis function calculation. To complete the study of the MuMM for the quarter of 5-spot problem, we present in Table 1 the number of iterations of the method for various ratios of permeability along with two choices of coarse grids. Note that the number of iterations increases slowly as a function of the strength of the permeability field. The criterion to stop iteration is based on how close the flux conservation is satisfied in the H scale.

4.2. Example 2: Slab geometry on a channelized field

The complex features of a channelized permeability field makes this example very challenging for testing multiscale methods, so that it is important to consider such a case in the evaluation of the MuMM performance. We use Ω = (0, 3 23 ) × (0, 1) which is discretized into 220 × 60 fine elements on which the permeability data is posed. The MuMM employs a coarse grid of 11 × 3 implying H = 1/3. This way, each coarse element possesses 20 × 20 fine elements. The left and right global boundary conditions are of Dirichlet type, and the top and bottom global boundary conditions are of homogeneous Neumann type (no flow). Fig. 8 shows the spatial profile ξ(x), which is the log permeability of layer 36 of SPE10 benchmark1 . The permeability is given by k(x) = exp(δ ξ(x)), where we adjust the parameter δ to give us permeability ratios of interest to our study. In the first case we consider the permeability ratio of 176 and three choices for the H scale, namely, 1/3, 1/6, and 1/12, respectively giving 4, 8 and 16 MMBFs in each coarse element. In Fig. 9 we compare tracer injection profiles for these three choices of H with the fine grid solution (computed using the iterative procedure from [10]). We note that with only 16 MMBFs per coarse element, the MuMM iteration can recover a very similar profile to the one obtained from a direct fine grid simulation. Furthermore, Fig. 10 compares the tracer cut curves, which is the fraction of the tracer in the produced fluid represented as Z cu · ν dl ∂Ωout F (t) = 1 − Z u · ν dl ∂Ωout
where ∂Ωout denotes outflow boundary. The tracer cut is plotted against the PVI given in (4.2). Next, to illustrate the importance of downscaling step within MuMM, we use 16 MMBFs per coarse element (H = H/4) and kmax /kmin = 104 . We calculate the velocity using MuMM with and without the downscaling step and make comparison against the direct fine grid simulation whose profile is plotted in Fig. 11. We note on the dominance of the flow in the regions that exhibit the channel 1

feature. In particular, we zoom on the region confined by the white lines (see Fig. 11) and compare the respective velocities in Fig. 12. As can be seen from that figure, the downscaling procedure improves the numerical solution. Finally we conclude the analysis of MuMM for Example 2 with Table 2, which shows the iterations of MuMM for various permeability ratios. The cost per iteration is the cost of computing (3.4) for each subdomain. These results indicate the efficiency of the MuMM to capture the features of the channelized permeability field. 5. Concluding Remarks
In this paper, we have laid out a framework for efficient numerical approximation of the velocity in the presence of heterogeneous media using a mixed method that is incorporated into a nonoverlapping domain decomposition procedure. The main attraction of the proposed framework is its immediate parallelizability owing to the construction of the multiscale basis functions within each coarse elements. On the global level, an iterative procedure is devised which only involves calculation on the edges of the coarse elements. This iteration avoids the construction and solving of linear algebra.

After the downscaling step we recover a good approximation to the solution in the fine scale, and mass conservation holds also in that scale. Sources and sinks are naturally incorporated in the procedure, by considering an extra MMBF (constructed with trivial Robin conditions) that takes into account the source or sink in the coarse partition element where it is located. The authors are currently implementing the 3D version of the procedure described here in a CPUGPU cluster. Moreover, the numerical analysis of the MuMM is underway.
