ROENTGENDIAGNOSTIK DER SKELETERKRANKUNGEN, T e i 1 2. Diseases of the Skeletal System (Roentgen Diagnosis) Part 2. By G. Von Bierling, E. Bi~rgel, O. Fischedick, H. Haage, K. Ranniger, F. Sommer and J-W. Weiss, ed. by L. von Diethelm, Vol. 5 Part 2 of Handbuch der medizinischen Radiologie, Encyclopedia of Medical Radiology by L. Diethelm, O. Olsson, F. Strnad, H. Vieten and A. Zuppinger. 28 cm. x 20 cm. Pp. 650 + xiv, 560 Figures, 992 separate illustrations. 1973. ISBN 3-540-05899-0. Berlin, Heidelberg, New York, Springer Verlag. DM 420 (U.S. Dollars 150, £65 approx.). Subscription price DM 336. This monumental work is really an encyclopedia of diagnostic radiology. Indeed the English version of the title page translates "handbook" as "encyclopedia". The all-embracing character of the work is appreciated when one realises that these 649 pages are given to four subjects only, partly esoteric, partly mundane. The briefest chapter deals with the osteolysis syndrome, which includes such rare conditions as essential osteolysis, acro-osteolysis, ainhum, etc. The difficulties which such catholic enterprise brings about is shown by the omission from the very large reference list of Lagier and Rutishauser, Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1965, 47 B, 2, 339, and other Anglo-American sources. The three other subjects are rather incongrously collected--inflammatory bone diseases, Paget's disease, and--occupying nearly half the volume--arthrography. For the hand surgeon there are most valuable descriptions of the arthrography of the carpal and finger joints by Haage. There is a very good demonstration of the rupture of the radial collateral ligament of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint, with the contrast medium actually seen to be issuing through the rupture The standard of reproduction of the X-rays is throughout very high. Price £7.00. U.S. Dollars 24.50. The author claims that this Atlas is primarily intended for use by trainee and established Radiologists, but that it will also be of valuable assistance to orthopaedic surgeons, etc. He might justifiably have added Hand Surgeons. It is a remarkable collection of pictures, many of them the rarer conditions of which the appearance may be unfamiliar to the Hand Surgeon. It is divided into fourteen parts on an aetiological basis, and I could not think of any important condition which had been omitted. Frequent perusal will familiarise the reader with these conditions and widen his knowledge. (Continued on next page) 272
