DISTINGUISHED REVIEWERS To maintain a high standard for the Journal, as editors, we are dependent on high-quality peer reviews. We are grateful to all reviewers who have unselfishly given their time to assist us with the editorial process and help the authors to improve their manuscripts. Why do reviewers review? For sheer pleasure? To learn how to design a study and present work? To get a preview of innovative science? For a feeling of honor to be recognized by peers? To have a role in shaping the field? Perhaps reviewing is one of the best examples of interprofessional respect that is exhibited by surgeons today. For the past 4 years, we have evaluated each review and considered a review to be of very high quality if it met the following characteristics: the confidential recommendations to the editor on originality, importance, and design and interpretation of the study were helpful, accurate, and thorough; it provided valuable insight and perspective; the comments to authors were useful in revising the manuscript; the comments were appropriate and transmissible to the author (etiquette); and the review was punctual. We have acknowledged these excellent reviews by writing to the authors and indicating that their review was “exemplary.” The following reviewers have received five or more letters from the editors commending them on their exemplary reviews of manuscripts (not case reports or technical notes) in the past 3 years up to October 1, 2001, and have also submitted their reviews promptly. Current members of the Editorial Board are not included in this list. We congratulate these “Distinguished Reviewers,” who represent about 10% of the individuals who have contributed their time and expertise to improve the quality of the Journal.
