experimental stages. Mandle Cheung, president of Computer Talk Technology (Cl-f) says, “Voice will never replace touch-tone. But it will certainly augment it over the next five to 10 years”. One of CTT’s clients are Bidwell & Co Inc, a firm which claims to be the only brokerage house in North America to provide that type of voice recognition. Instead of punching numbers on a keypad a caller simply asks for a specific stock to get the current share price. Bidwell are looking at developing automatic order entry to eliminate the need to speak to a broker. Bidwell’s system, TeleQuote, can distinguish different accents but problems arise when background noise interferes with the caller’s voice. Despite these advances, speech recognition is growing more slowly than was hoped.

DOS virus scan disappointing Security features in MS DOS 6.0 are incapable of detecting more than 1000 viruses, according to a report in Computing. Tests, carried out by US virus testing company VSUM, showed that DOS 6.0 could only identify 53.1% of 2015 known viruses. Central Point, which supplied the software, claimed there were weaknesses in the tests. Jim Horsburgh, UK managing director, argued: “Scanning for viruses is just one feature of an anti-virus product. The overall approach to protection should be looked at.” However, he also admitted that the anti-virus component in DOS 6.0 was out of date. To address this problem, Central Point has launched a new service, Safe Six. Using this service DOS 6.0, users can subscribe to regular virus updates.

Marketplace There is now an upgraded version of Central Point Software’s Anti-Virus package aimed at Novell NetWare 3.11 networks. The latest version NLM compatible Anti-Virus for NetWare (1.1) is further enhanced with the increasing flexibility due to ‘Domain Support’. Because of this the network can be arranged into smaller groups to give localized ownership of the virus

protection and safeguard against server failures by providing local virus alerts. Additional virus signatures have also been added and the speed of scanning has been improved to boost network efficiency. Integration

and

desktops on the network is provided by CentralTalk, a communications protocol which enables critical virus information to be communicated

across the network. This provides

three simultaneous lines of defence: at the desktop level, to prevent initial entry of a virus into the system; at the network level, through the server protection NLM, to prevent a virus from entering the IAN by infecting a server; at the enterprise level, via the master NLM, to prevent propagation of a virus through the LAN and the entire enterprise. Central Point have cut the cost of this update as the price for the single server software includes unlimited workstation connections to that server. Central Point have also announced the release of their new version of Central Point Anti-Virus 2.0, a DOS-based virus protection program. The aim of the product is to provide PC users with up-to-date protection against existing and future viruses without requiring frequent updates. The new version defends against 2000 known viruses and offers increased performance and reduced memory requirements to provide comprehensive virus protection. Anti-Virus 2.0 uses the system ‘Virus Analyser’ to detect unknown viruses generically. It uses a built-in expert system to compare with what is currently known code and therefore needs about files in an uninfected

uses SmartChecks to distinguish between legitimate file changes and file changes caused by a virus. It allows users to clean both known and unknown viruses without virus-specific information and when viruses are removed the file is perfectly restored to its original, uninfected state. The new Smart Signatures feature allows for easy updating of both detection and cleaning capabilities throughout an organization. Smart
