In 1952, in c o l l a b o r a t i o n with Dr Devraigne, a gynaecologist at a Parisian hospital, he carried out clinical trials with Folliculinum. In 1953 Henri Boiron was elected chairman of the Syndicat National des Pharmacien Hom6opathes and remained in this post for 28 years. He set to work on a colossal task: obtaining the recognition of homoeopathic medicine by contact with the regulatory authorities and with professional groups of pharmacists and physicians. In 1955 he was a founder m e m b e r of the Comit6 International des Pharmaciens Hom6opathes. Today his intense activity can be seen as one of the essential sources of the international development of homoeopathy which resulted in the inclusion of homoeopathy in the French Pharmacopoeia, starting with the 8th edition (1965). The monographs of this pharmacopoeia have also served as models for other pharmacopoeias including the American and European Pharmacopoeias. His attitude can be s u m m e d up in his own words in September 1993: Over 61 years ago now, when Jean and I 'married' homoeopathy-- and that is the right word to use--we never would have thought, so many years later, that we could have engendered such a large family! I can only say that this day will be remembered in our long, very long career. We are so pleased to be part of this encounter which once again shows the dynamism and creativity of the laboratory we founded. JEAN REMY
DR HENRI BOIRON Henri Boiron died in Lyon, France, on 24th March 1994 aged 88. In 1932 a passion for homoeopathy brought together a group of physicians and pharmacists to found a laboratory. Two young pharmacists, the twin brothers Henri and Jean Boiron, were placed in charge of it. It eventually developed into Laboratoires Boiron, currently the biggest producers of homoeopathic medicines in the world. From the founding of the laboratory until the end of his life Henri Boiron pursued an active professional role dedicated to homoeopathy, maintaining close relations with medical and pharmaceutical circles and the authorities. In 1945 he took over the pharmacy at 68 boulevard Malesherbes, later going on to found Laboratoires Hom~opathiques Henri Boiron,
DR KEITH NOBLETT Preston-born Keith was educated at Preston G r a m m a r School and studied medicine at Manchester University, qualifying in 1959. He q u i c k l y e n t e r e d g e n e r a l p r a c t i c e in Blackpool, where he stayed for 21 years until his retirement at 50, in 1983, because of illhealth. He had by then been heavily committed to homoeopathy, having successfully 191
