Dragonflies and Damselflies of Britain and Northern Europe. By Bob Gibbons. The Hamlyn Publishing Group Ltd, Twickenham, Middlesex. 1986. 144 pp. ISBN 0 600 333 787 (hardback), 0 600 358 410 (softback). Price: £12.95 (hardback), £7.95 (softback). Bob Gibbons has written an excellent little book on the dragonflies of Britain and Northern Europe--in fact it is remarkable how much useful information he has managed to get into 144 pages. Not only does he describe 75 species found in Northern Europe, but there are very interesting accounts of breeding biology, migration and dispersal, parasites and predators, and particularly a chapter on dragonfly habitats. The species accounts include some very useful tips on identification and in the section on conservation he refers to the widespread influence of pollution and eutrophication of waterways which has greatly reduced the numbers of dragonflies in some areas. At £7.95, although this is a small book, it is very good value.

The Preservation of Species. Edited by Bryan G. Norton. Princeton University Press, Princeton, NJ. 1986. 305 pp. ISBN 0 691 08389 4. Price: £21.20. The eleven essays brought together in this book originate from a working group assembled at the Centre for Philosophy and Public Policy in the University of Maryland. The group included biologists, social scientists and resource managers, both from the private and public sectors as well as 313 Biol.
