DSM announces investment plan for powder coating resins Royal DSM NV has announced its long term manufacturing plan to expand its polyester powder coating resin facilities and prepare its manufacturing network for the future. The capacity at three of its locations will be expanded, while preparations have started for further expansions. Including investments currently under consideration, the long term manufacturing plan would result in a total capacity expansion of 40 ktonnes. The investments are scheduled for the period 2007-2010. As a first step, the facilities in Schoonebeek (The Netherlands), Ping Tung (Taiwan) and Santa Margarida (Spain) will be expanded. At the site in Augusta (GA, USA) engineering has already been started to prepare for a significant expansion of capacity for the American market. DSM is already the global leader in powder coating resins and with the long term investment plan it will further fortify its leadership position. Powder coating resins are used in a wide variety of industrial applications for the coating of amongst others white goods, radiators, facades, car parts and bicycles. Over recent years the powder coating resins industry is estimated to have grown at around 6%/y. This is significantly higher than the growth in the general coatings industry. The trends towards reduction of solvent emissions, carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption are expected to stimulate further growth of powder coatings, as these do not release solvents into the air, have reduced carbon dioxide MAY 2008

emissions, and use less energy then competing coating systems. The announced investments are in addition to the capacity expansion as announced in 2006 in Kunshan (China), Ping Tung and Sta Margarida. The investments at both Asian sites are fully aligned with and supported by Eternal Chemical, DSM’s joint venture partner for these operations. Gerben Algra, Global Business Director for DSM Powder Coating Resins, commented: “The investment will greatly strengthen DSM’s global leadership position in polyester powder coating resins and underlines our commitment to this market. The expansions are essential to support DSM’s continuous growth and most importantly, to enable a continued impeccable service to our customers. Also, the investment plan clearly signals the opportunities DSM sees for innovative and more sustainable products like powder coating resins.” Press release from: DSM Powder Coating Resins, Ceintuurbaan 5, 8022 AW Zwolle, PO Box 615, 8000 AP Zwolle, The Netherlands, tel: +31 (0) 38 456 95 69, fax +31 (0) 38 456 95 00, website: http://www.dsmpowdercoatingresins.com (17 Apr 2008)

Market ups and downs: coatings sales in 2007 Germany’s powder coatings output climbed by roughly 6-8% in 2007, compared with 12% to 73,500 tonnes in 2006, according to the German Coatings Industry Association. transportation group were up 21.9% to 3.9 M gallons from 3.2 M/g in 2006. In the building and construction sector, architectural powder shipment expanded from 1.6 M/gallons to 1.8 M/gallons, up 11.2% in sales and in value from $18.9 M to $21.3 M. Appliance powder coatings grew by 15.2% in volume and 13.2% in value. Appliance liquid coatings dropped by 3.7% in volume in 2006 but climbed by 3.9% in value. Powder technology on the up The global market for powder coatings stood at 1180 ktonnes (€4.5 bn) in 2006, expanding by 4.5%/y by volume and 5.6% by value. Europe uses 37% of the global market. Akzo Nobel, Rohm and Haas and DuPont rule the European markets with an output of less than 50% of the global powder paints. Russia’s total paint demand stood at a range of 900-1000 ktonnes in 2007. Its powder coatings consumption of 35 ktonnes/y is 4% of the overall paint market and around 10% of the market for industrial and special purpose coatings. Akzo Nobel HB is a major producer with an output of 4 ktonnes powder coatings at its plant situated near the town of Orekhovo-Zuevo, Moscow region. Ukraine consumes almost 300 ktonnes/y of various coatings and powder coatings, primarily imported, represent only 5-8 ktonnes of the figure.
