W h a t is d e s c r i b e d as t h e l a t e s t t e c h n o l o g y in c o m b i n i n g d u s t control with refrigerated storage developed by Extract Technology, is a selfcontained system designed a n d b u i l t f o r G l a x o c h e m ' s UIverston quality assurance laboratory. Here sample handling takes place, i n v o l v i n g w e i g h i n g of antibiotic powders from a w i d e r a n g e of m a t e r i a l s . E a c h of t h e m a t e r i a l s is h e l d at 4°C in r e f r i g e r a t e d s t o r a g e h o u s ings- located between each of f o u r d u s t c o n t r o l b o o t h s . The booths are D-range D o w n f l o w units, e a c h p r o viding a 2.5m wide work area w i t h a 1,300ram s a f e w o r k d e p t h . T h e r e a r w o r k s t a t i o n is a m o d i f i e d v e r s i o n of t h e c o m p a n y ' s d o w n - d r a u g h t e d balance bench, which can prov i d e safe d u s t c o n t a i n m e n t whilst being compatible with a four place analytical balance. T h e p l a n t c o n s i s t s of a rotary feed valve, hopper and screw conveyor, an electrically heated rotary retort w i t h f o r c e d c o o l i n g a n d discharge chute to customer's quench tank. C a r b o n , w h i c h is s t o r e d in a w a t e r f l o o d e d h o p p e r , is fed into a dewatering screw feeder which reduces the w a t e r c o n t e n t by w e i g h t t o 42% before entering the rotary retort. The carbon then enters the k i l n w h e r e it is h e a t e d a n d h e l d at t h e r e q u i r e d t e m p e r a t u r e - as h i g h as 850°C in some applications. T h e c a r b o n is t h e n c o o l e d to approximately 300/400°0 b e f o r e d i s c h a r g i n g via t h e rear hopper by gravity into the water quench tank. Dust extraction A £0.46m dust extraction s y s t e m i n s t a l l e d b y DPE at Chippendale Kitchens' new £16m kitchen furniture factory at S c u n t h o r p e , i n c l u d e s 11 e x t r a c t i o n f a n s f i t t e d w i t h 60, 75 and 100hp motors, which h a n d l e a t o t a l t h r o u g h p u t of 260,000 ft31min of d u s t l a d e n a i r f r o m t h e p r o d u c t i o n mac h i n e r y , w i t h t h e c l e a n , filtered air returned to the factory. In a d d i t i o n , f u m e e x t r a c t i o n e q u i p m e n t is u s e d i n s i d e t h e lacquer plant, to disperse fumes from the solvents used into the atmosphere. In t o t a l some 3,400m (11,150ft) o f d u c t i n g h a s b e e n installed inside the 250,000ft 2 factory. The company has also supplied two 60hp transport fans e a c h h a n d l i n g 6,000 ft3/m which collect the waste dust f r o m t h e d i s c h a r g e s i d e s of t h e f i l t e r s a n d d e p o s i t it v i a a chain conveyor and rotary v a l v e in t h e t r a n s p o r t d u c t .
