screening

for delicate

Offering increased productivity, the Allgaier tumbler screening machine from Hosokawa Micron is capable of processing fine or ultrafine delicate or problem materials without damage. Ensuring a very high standardof bulk material separation, principal fields of application include chemicals, pharmaceuticals, spices, food and confectionery, plastics, animal feeds, fertilisers, metallurgy, mining, wood processing and chipboard manufacture. With a power-driven, lowfrequency vibratory movement entirely independent of the applied load, the circular screening assembly is subjected to three-dimensional oscillation - a special feature of the unit. Advantages include approximately four times more output per mz of screen area than with vibratory screens, environment-friendly and low noise operation, dust-tight construction, low power consumption and low maintenance. The compact modular design allows a wide variety of configurations to be possible, permitting an appropriate machine to be constructed for any application. To allow screening to be performed on a contin-

uous trouble-free basis, units can be equipped with the new ultrasonic cleaning system which effectively prevents blinding of the screen mesh, making available improved performance to solve the most difficult screening problems. Suitable for use with ultrafine screens and difficult-to-screen materials, the system can be retrofitted to existing units, offering long lifetime for the screen fabric while ensuring low power consumption and low operating temperature. Offering complete system flexibility, the machine can be precisely adjusted to suit any bulk material. The drive power and machine parameters can be infinitely adjusted, allowing the material to be directed over the screen at any designed speed and dwell-time to achieve optimum results. Hosokawa Micron can plan, design and install complete Allgaier processing plants, or it can draw up proposals for integrated equipment or individual process stages. Ultipleat Profile cartridge the food and beverage A technological advance in the manufacturing process for filters has led to the development of Pall Ultipleat Profile cartridge filters, a new generation of tapered pore cartridge filters. The introduction of the Ultipleat Profile element to the food and beverage markets is claimed to represent a milestone as the shape of the filter industry is redefined by Palls new pleat geometry. As a result of its unique pleat configuration and proprietary tapered pore filter medium, the flow resistance of an Ultipleat Profile filter is claimed to be up to half that of a conventional pleated cartridge filter, and l/15 that of a conventional depth filter. Consequently they provide longer service life and smaller filter systems with this falter. Smaller filter systems result in lower filter operating costs and lower fluid holdup. The Ultipleat Profile medium is also thicker than that found in a conventional pleated filter, and is optimised for gel removal and sharp distinct particle removal, making it ideal for all types of viscous fluids and dispersions

New-generation Efficient

effluent

treatment

Desalination Systems has announced a development in eMuent treatment for the textile industry. The aim is to both conserve water and to treat it effectively and efficiently. With tightening environmental restrictions, the Desal-5 nanofiltration membrane is claimed to offer a sound treatment for dyeing and finishing processes. The Desal-5 has been used in textile applications in Europe for several years, and is beginning to be used in the US as an alternative to conventional treatments. This innovative membrane product offers a cost-effective alternative, by removing colour and other organic substances from a waste stream, allowing reuse of water and salt. Handling of effluent has become a major expense and a critical issue with textile finishing and dyeing plants. With more stringent state and federal regulations, the future lies in membrane technology to protect both the environment and the bottom line. A thin-film membrane that falls into the region between reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration, Desal-5 removes TDS, 286

soluble dyes, heavy metals and contributors to BOD - allow’ing reuse of salts and up 90% of the process water. Desal claims to offer the unique ability to tailor spiral element construction to meet difficult textile application demands. Heat-resistant element construction and materials mean that process temperatures up to 90°C may be maintained. Patented feed spacers optimise hydraulic flow to reduce element fouling, while the Durasan outer wrap allows easier, more efficient cleaning. Textile manufacturers benefit from treatment based on Desal-5 through environmental compliance and material recovery. Treating water at the point of source, rather than discharge to either a municipal wastewater treatment plant or receiving stream, reduces discharge fees and complies with new, tougher environmental regulations. Nanofiltration also allows recovery of process chemicals and water from numerous different textile process streams. Desalination Systsms Inc, 760 Shadowridge Drive, Vista, CA 92083-7986, USA. filters for industries in addition to those applications where longer service life is required. Ultipleat Profile filters are constructed entirely of polypropylene, a US FDA-listed material, which results in low extractables and makes them compatible with an extremely wide range of fluids. These filters are therefore ideal in a wide variety of filter applications in the food and beverage industry including corn syrup, edible oils, bottled water, beer, soft drinks and distilled spirits. The filters are available in absolute removal ratings from 4.5 to 100 urn, and in both Al3 (single open-ended) and Pall Uni Lot cartridge (double open-ended) configurations. The individual 10 inch Uni Lot cartridges may be simply snapped together to form a 20, 30 or 40 inch cartridge filter, or are available as one piece 10, 20, 30 or 40 inch constructions. Pall

Polytex

J B Thorne has introduced a radically improved version of its Polytex intermittent extractor, claimed to give greater value for money and improved efficiency. The key improvements are a more efficient shaker mechanism which is quieter in operation, and redesigned, more widely spaced filters. The wider gaps between filters mean that the new Polytex will handle a larger range of dust particles than before; it will also accept a wide range of filter media. In addition, the filter fitted as standard is even harder-wearing than previously. The new units still feature the company’s unique and internationally patented aerostatic double seal system, which is guaranteed failsafe and is available on no other dust extraction equipment. With this system, even if the seal is damaged, it is impossible for dust particles to leak through it from the contaminated zone to the clean air zone. This is becauses clean air is at all times in contact with the gap between the two seal faces, and is at a pressure greater than the contaminated air to be filtered. Together with a secondary high efficiency particle arrestor

(HEPA) mounted after the primaiy dust filtering system to guard against damage to the primary filter medium itself, it ensures total system integrity in the event of either seal or filter bag failure, or both. The new Polytex unit works in a similar way to the original model. It collects dust at source, drawing it through ducting by a powerful fan and trapping it in the filter bag system. With the extra top-mounted HEPA a total system operating efficiency of 99.997% is claimed the arrestor also acts as a failsafe mechanism in the unlikely event of failure in the primary system. Because the system is efficient, cleaned air may be vented back into the working area if desired, as an energy-saving measure. In a multiple installation covering several work-stations, units may be switched on individually, bringing further energy efficiency. All the units in the new range may be specified with an optical automatic explosion detection and suppression system.
