The international seminar "East Eurasian Seminar 9 8 was held at the conference hall of Chingis Khan Hotel in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, during October 13-14, 1998. This seminar was organized by the "Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources" project (IGMR Project) of Mongolian GeologicalSurvey. The purpose of this seminar was to give a chance of presentation in English for geologists who are interested in Mongolia and neighbouring countries. The following two sessions were held: (1)Resource Geology (MineralResources, Energy Resources and Environmental Geology) (2) General Geology (Stratigraphy, Tectonics and Petrology). Besides these sessions, a post-seminar one-day field excursion was arranged to discuss the problems on late Paleozoic strata and visit some pegmatite deposits related to Mesozoic granite. Next day was kept for visiting the GeologicalMuseum of Mongolian TechnicalUniversity and Central Geological Laboratory. The seminar was attended

by 99 participants who officially registered and about 30 students from the Mongolian Technical University. The participants were from Mongolia, Japan,Austria, Romania, Germany, France and USA. The seminar was organized under the sponsorship of Japanese International Cooperation Agency and Mineral Resources Authority of Mongolia, and supported by Mongolian Technical University and Academy of Science. The abstract volume of the seminar contains 58 research contributions. This volume was published as a special issue of "Mongolian Geoscientist" (bimonthlygeological journal in English). In the resource geology session, geological background and potentiality of metal, non-metal, and fuel deposits in Mongolia were presented and also how to develop mining in Mongolia was discussed. In addition to the resource geology of Mongolia, chromite deposits in Albania and Japan, REE deposits in China, and poly-metal deposits in Japan (Kuroko) were also presented. In the general geology

session, new data and concept of geology in Mongolia were shown. For example, concepts of granitoids series and accretionarytectonics were proposed for geological research works of Mongolia. Besides geology of Mongolia, geology and tectonics of Romania were introduced in detail. In addition to oral presentation of research works, many geologic maps and the results of geological and mineralogical investigations were shown in poster session. Post-seminar field excursion to Paleozoic strata and some pegmatite depositswas also held near Ulaanbaatar. The field

excursion was attended by 13 participants including 3 Japanese, 2 Austrian and 1Romanian geologists. The Paleozoic strata in this excursion was investigated on microfossils.Just before this seminar, several species of conodonts were found in red chert at the stop of the field excursion. Many pegmatite deposits in the excursion area were previously active mines. This seminar is a first trial of using English language for geological conference in Mongolia. The seminar might inspire Mongolian geologists, and enthuse international exchange of scientific ideas.
