Editorial introduction by the Editor-in-Chief: Peter P. Chen 1. Celebration of the 50th volume with a set of invited papers from world-class experts The Editorial Board of the Data & Knowledge Engineering (DKE) Journal is very happy to celebrate the 50th volume of the journal. In this fast-moving and highly competitive world, it is not easy to see many scientific journals to reach the 50th volume. Not only has DKE reached its 50th volume, but also it has become one of the top quality journals in the field. Here, I would like to thank the Editor-for-Europe (Prof. Dr. Reind van de Riet), all the editorial board members, the referees, the authors, the journal subscribers, and the readers for their efforts and help to make the DKE journal a success! To celebrate this event, we have prepared this special issue by inviting some of the world-class experts to share their most recent research findings and insights to our readers. Because our main scope is in data and knowledge engineering, it is natural and desirable to invite the winners of the top awards in this field to contribute to this volume. We are pleased to announce that the invited authors of this 50th volume are either the winners of the ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award or the IJCAI (International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence) Research Excellence Award–– two of the top awards in IT and AI areas. The complete lists of the ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award winners and the IJCAI Research Excellence Award are given in Appendices A and B. It is very unusual for any journal to have papers from more than one of such world-class experts. It is an honor for the DKE journal to be one of the first journals to have acomplished this rare, difficult, and exciting arrangement. The following is the list of papers and editorials in this special issue: • Editorials Editorial from the Editor-in-Chief (Peter P. Chen). Editorial from the Editor-for-Europe (Reind van de Riet). • Invited papers (in alphabetical order for the first three papers) Ruzena Bajcsy (Winner of ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award) and Rick McGeer, ‘‘CITRIS and data and knowledge engineering: what is old and what is new?’’ Aravind Joshi (Winner of IJCAI Research Excellence Award), ‘‘Domains of locality’’. Lotfi A. Zadeh (Winner of ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award), ‘‘A note on web intelligence, world knowledge and fuzzy logic’’. Reind van de Riet (Editor-for-Europe), ‘‘The future refereeing process in Cyberspace of the Data & Knowledge Engineering Journal: an attempt in guaranteeing security and privacy on three levels’’. 0169-023X/$ - see front matter 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V. doi:10.1016/j.datak.2004.05.001
