EDITOR'S NOTE 1976
Progress in Oceanography, in this new format, continues to present papers on diverse topics and in diverse styles. Review papers are welcome as the emphasis in the title should be on "progress" and review papers might well assess the present state of a subject. Nevertheless many other types of paper demonstrate how various marine topics have developed by focusing on some particular aspect; is it a truism to say that intense specialism needs an ever-broadening basis of knowledge ? The submission of such papers is equally welcome. It may happen that various features of a paper, such as a detailed historical introduction, an unusually distinct description of instrumentation or a more exhaustive account of the observations, are too lengthy for publication in more usual journals, and yet by their very detail these features may be pertinent and their presentation may be necessary. If such oceanographic papers are significant then they are appropriate for publication in Progress in Oceanography. My predecessors as editor, Dr Mary Sears and Dr Bruce Warren, indicated their willingness to consider original papers and this policy is being continued. There is no bias towards any particular marine subject, the contents of each future volume will depend on the papers submitted and may thus be as eclectic as the word "oceanography". Volume 7 Number 1 is a paper on midwater fishes in the eastern North Atlantic, Number 2 furthers our knowledge of physical oceanography in the M E D O C area, other papers anticipated in Volume 7 are on growth conditions of manganese nodules and on some aspects of the physical chemistry of seawater. Papers in Progress in Oceanography are now to appear as single parts of a volume. Such a manner of presentation should reduce delay in publication of an individual paper. I look forward to receiving further contributions.
