bines a fast-cutting grinding wheel and a blending and finishing wheel to remove heavy welds on stainless steel is now available from Rex-Cut Products, Inc. The Rex-Cut Grind and Blend Kit pairs a fast cutting, chatter-free Sigma Green zirconiaceramic grinding wheel with a resilient cotton fiber Type 27 blending and finishing wheel for removing heavy welds on stainless steel. This abrasive kit, which is capable of producing a 32 RMS or better finish, is ideal for surface preparation and final finishing. Cutting up to 50% faster than an aluminum oxide grinding wheel, the Sigma Green wheel in the Rex-Cut Grind and Blend Kit features a 36grit zirconia-ceramic grain and a proprietary bond for aggressive grinding. The cotton fiber Type 27 blending wheel uses a 54-grit aluminum oxide abrasive and both wheels are 41/2" in diameter (available with and without hubs). COLD BLACKENER REPLACEMENT Now manufacturers can finish iron and steel components with a lowtemperature, environmentally friendly process that serves as a lowcost replacement for polluting cold blackening. The MicroLok AO process from Birchwood Casey www.metalfinishing.com

forms a non-toxic, aluminum-oxide conversion coating that is 0.000060 inches (1.5 microns) thick, silver/black in color, and tightly adherent to the metal surface. When sealed with a rust preventive, the finish provides robust corrosion protection that is better than cold blackening at half the cost, without undesirable pollution hazards. MicroLok AO is ideal for users of cold blackeners who want a replacement that is safe to apply and avoids the use of EPA-regulated (copper and selenium) chemicals. The patented MicroLok AO solution contains no regulated chemicals-process rinse waters are generally sewerable as nonhazardous discharge-and applying the finish requires only five steps and 15 minutes. Additional benefits include: anti-galling protection to aid in assembly and startup; temperature stability up to 1,400°F; safe 120-140°F operation with no boiling or splattering; no scale or sludge buildup in tanks; and easier bath maintenance requiring only pH monitoring. EDS ANALYSIS EDAX lnc., a leader in X-ray microanalysis and electron diffraction instrumentation, has introduced the next series of Apollo SOD detectors for X-ray microanalysis. For the past several years SDD detectors have been able to process a very high volume of X-rays, making high-speed mapping possible. At times, the reso-

lution was sacrificed to achieve increased throughput. With the new Apollo Series, mapping resolution no longer suffers. High-resolution, high-speed mapping is defined by EDAX as better than 135 eV resolution @ 100,000 cps and deadtime of 30% throughput. The Apollo Series is the perfect complement to EDAX's market-leading Genesis software, bringing all the advanced features for qualitative and quantitative analysis, mapping, and particle analysis to the materials characterization scientist. WATER-BASED POLYMERS Diversified Applications Engineering Technologies (Daetec) has developed a unique product line of environmentally responsible, water-soluble temporary adhesives and coatings. Daetec also offers custom systems to meet specialized manufacturing requirements. Daetec's WTak series coatings, specially formulated to simplify production practices and cut costs, withstand a range of chemical and thermal processing steps, yet are easily cleaned with detergents. This unique polymer protects during manufacturing steps such as grinding, sawing, slicing, polishing, chemical, or thermal exposure. WTak polymer systems are applied by spin, spray, dip, slit, or brush. Depending on the coating, curing is by UV, heat, or at room temperature. The WTak series offers thermal resistance from 100· C to 300·C. Complementing these polymer systems are Daetec's WClean series detergents uniquely designed for removal of the coating of choice. These detergents are designed to remove photoresist, solder flux, oils February 2010 I metalfinishing 149
