No one knows how many dentists and their dependents will some day find it neces sary to seek aid from the American Dental Association Relief Fund. Mercifully, most of those who will need financial aid have, as yet, no inkling of that need. What is known, however, is the mechanism by which those who face insurmountable financial crises may acquire the assistance which the Relief Fund provides. First of all, the component and constituent societies recommend to the Fund that a dentist, or his survivors, be granted aid. The Council on Relief o f the Association— the agency which administers the Fund— then provides half of the recommended grant, the constituent society the remainder. The source o f these funds is, of course, the afflicted dentists’ colleagues who contribute to the Association’s Relief Fund. Half of each contribution is returned to the constituent society of which the contributing dentist is a member; the other half remains in the Indentured Trust known as the American Dental Association Relief Fund. The Fund’s mode of operation is comfortingly stable, for the money paid out comes only from interest and dividends earned by the Fund’ s investments. At present these earnings are barely adequate to meet the need. It is essential, therefore, that the Fund’s investments become greater each year so that the earnings will grow to meet increasing demands. Only a modest annual contribution from each dentist would enable the Fund’ s growth to keep pace with demand. A five dollar contribution from each dentist is this year’s goal. The Relief Fund works, and remarkably well. During the past five years, for example, needy dentists and survivors, young and old, have received over $294,000 from the Association’s Fund and an equal amount from the funds of the constituent societies, a total well over half a million dollars. Don’ t forget your colleagues; the majority of them are not forgetting you. Draft and address your check to the American Dental Association Relief Fund, 222 East Superior Street, Chicago 11, Illinois.
