ICIS top M&A: global valuations accelerate in 2016 Global market conditions have recovered from a tumultuous 1Q 2016, paving the way for more chemical mergers and acquisitions (M&A) as transactions surged $16 bn from 2014 levels to $65 bn in 2015. Asia-based firms have taken a commanding share in global M&As with 51% of acquisitions in 2015. The largest deals include Air Liquide/Airgas, CF Industries/OCI, ChemChina/Syngenta ($43 bn) and Dow/DuPont. Major acquisitions include AkzoNobel (€475 M for BASF's business), Evonik ($3.8 bn for Air Products' specialty and coatings additives business), Sherwin-Williams ($11.3 bn for Valspar) and Westlake ($23.35/share for Axiall). Upcoming spin-offs include Ingevity (specialty chemicals business of WestRock), Versum Materials (electronic materials business of Air Products) and Valvoline (lubricants business of Ashland). In Apr 2016, Chemours (a DuPont spin-off) secured the $230 M divestment of its Clean and Disinfect business to LANXESS. ARLANXEO will be formed as a synthetic rubber joint venture of Saudi Aramco and LANXESS.
