60 planned projects set to push global propylene capacity to new levels by 2020, says GlobalData Global propylene capacity is set to experience strong growth over the next five years, increasing from 111.8 M tonnes/y in 2015 to 129.8 M tonnes/y by 2020, as around 60 planned projects are slated to come online over the period, according to research and consulting firm GlobalData. The company's latest report states that the projects will primarily be undertaken by China and the US. Indeed, of 38 planned propylene projects in Asia, China is responsible for 24, and will add 5.6 M tonnes/y by 2019. The country's capital expenditure (capex) is set to reach $3.62 bn over the next five years, and the leading companies accounting for major capacity additions will be Fujian Meide Petrochemical Co Ltd and Ningbo Fortune Petrochemical Co Ltd. Indonesia is set to contribute the second highest capacity in Asia, adding 1.6 M tonnes/y by 2019, and planning capex of around $2.14 bn over the next five years. Advanced biofuels news: NREL publishes results of annual advanced biofuel survey The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has reported the results of its latest annual survey of US nonstarch ethanol and renewable hydrocarbon biofuel generators. The report, titled "2015 Survey of Non-Starch Ethanol and Renewable Hydrocarbon Biofuel Producers,'' involved 114 companies and resulted in 61 plants (comprising of 32 renewable hydrocarbon facilities, 27 cellulosic ethanol units and two algae-derived ethanol projects). In 2015, of the 29 nonstarch ethanol plants surveyed, 11 were operational, with five at commercial scale. Of the 32 renewable hydrocarbon units, 12 were operational. A table provides the capacity (gal/y) and operational year of commercial-scale renewable hydrogen additions of 11 US companies as of 2015.
